555 Montrose Review. October 14th 1843
Eight Lives Lost.--- It is our melancholy duty this
week, to record one of the severest calamities which has
befallen our neighbourhood for many years past. On
the evening of Tuesday last, betwix eleven and twelve
o'clock, the usual complement of fishing boats with their
crews left Ferryden, and proceeded to the fishing
ground--- a distance of twelve miles off our harbour.
The evening was calm, and gave no indication of the
coming storm; but at three o'clock the following morn-
ing and just when the different crews were preparing to
commence fishing, the wind, which had previously been
from the north-east, suddenly chopped round to the
south, and came away with a heavy squall, capsizing
two of the boats, and precipitating their crews in the
waste of waters. The accident was observed by some
of the men in the other boats, who lost no time in pull-
ing towards their suffering fellows; but melancholy to
relate, ere they reached the spot, one whole boat's crew,
seven in number, had sunk to rise no more. they suc-
ceeded, however, in saving five men, out of six who
composed the crew of the other boat. The following
are the names of the sufferers, vis:-- James West,
William Watt, Findlay Coull, David Mearns, Robert
West (son of James West), John Pert, James Coull,
and David Moffat. The four first-mentioned sufferers have
left widows and seventeen children to deplore the loss
of their husbands and fathers. The distress and suffer-
ing occasioned by this disasterto the families more im-
mediately concerned are deplorable, and loudly for
the aid and sympathy of the benevolent in our town and
neighbourhood.

556 Mr. William Macpherson, F.E.I.S., Headmaster of the Daniel The Daniel Stewart Institution, Strath Tay

The Daniel Stewart Institution, Strathtay was founded in 1814.

Daniel Stewart ~ Benefactor
Daniel Stewart: Born to a family of crofters in Logierait, Strathtay, Perthshire in 1740 or 1741, Daniel Stewart spent his early life as a herd boy. After an apprenticeship with a wig-maker in Edinburgh he traveled to India as valet to a client of that wig-maker. Upon his employer?s death he came into £11,000; from this fortune he amassed even greater wealth by speculating in property. Now wealthy he found himself appointed as Master of the Court of Exchequer. Daniel Stewart is the subject of a portrait by Henry Raeburn in the style of Joshua Reynolds. Daniel Stewart never married but lived alone at Windmill Street in Edinburgh form 1786. He died in 1814 an left his fortune in trust to care for a dependent and then for several charities. Part of the money went to found a domicile for healthy indigent boys in 1859 ? but within eleven years of establishment the school became a commercial enterprise.

Scottish Naming Custom
The oldest son after the paternal grandfather. (father's father)
The second son after the maternal grandfather. (mother's father)
The third son after the father.
The fourth son after father's oldest brother
The fifth son after father's 2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother
The eldest daughter after the maternal grandmother. ( mother's mother)
The second daughter after the paternal grandmother.
The third daughter after the mother.
The fourth daughter after mother's oldest sister.
The fifth daughter after mother's 2nd oldest sister or father's oldest sister.
Watching for these patterns can help in your genealogy research but Scottish (and Irish) naming conventions can create problems.
Cousins, aunts, uncles all have the same names. Half generations apart. Is the entire family accounted for? Also, whether there are children that died. Sometimes families reused a family name if a child died, sometimes not. Pattern for 4th and 5th sons might be interrupted to name a son for a favorite saint
Mac is the Gaelic word for son. It is abbreviated to often "Mc", but originally it was the longer word and normally followed by a space and then the surname. Both Mac and Mc variations are in wide use in both Ireland and Scotland.

557 Mrs. Thomasina Sinclair. The death of Mrs. Thomasina Sinclair occurred at her home, Maleny, on August 13. The deceased, who was one of the pioneers of the district, was born in Cumberland, England, in 1865. She was married in 1885 to Mr. William Sinclair, who predeceased her about eight years ago. Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair came to Australia in the ship Duke of Sutherland, and settled at the Blackall Range in 1888. The late Mrs. Sinclair is survived by a family of six Messrs. William, Thomas, and Archie Sinclair, and Mesdames M. Masson and A. Rowe, of Brisbane, and J. Beacom, of Maleny. One son, Robert, was killed while on active ser vice in the Great War.

Priests
At the original Sønderho Church:

Jens Lauridsen Foss (1727-1749)
Born on 18 December 1694 as the son of parish priest Laurids Davidsen Foss in Pjedsted vicarage near Vejle.

JL Foss graduated from Horsens Latin School in 1715 and from the academy in 1719. After that he first taught children in various vicarages for 5 years, after which he taught at Ribe Latin School for 3 years.

On 28 February 1727 he became an assistant and successor to Christian Engelstoft, and finally he took over the office as parish priest in Sønderho on 22 May 1739.
Completely in line with Chr. Engelstoft's other activities, however, he did not resign from office without first making sure that Foss gave him a pension for the rest of his life! So Foss had to buy into the not very lucrative vocation.
To Foss' luck, it only took 3½ years before Engelstoft died.

Jens Lauridsen was the son of Laurits Davidsen Foss af Ribe Cathredal

Ole Degn: Rich and poor in Ribe. Volumes 1-2 from 1981, in volume 2 pages 92-101 have an overview of most of the probates 1646-1660, where the deceased and spouse are listed.

In some of the shifts it says that the child gets free food, shoes, clothes and lessons (to keep it to honor and learn) until the child becomes e.g. 14 years, which is stated as: "under 14 years".
If there is instead free food etc. for 5 years, state: "free food for 5 years".

The family relationships are not always specified, so it is with some reservations that I state these in the first protocols, just as there may be more children than those indicated.

The following abbreviations are used:

B: child / children
E: widow / widower

Peder Estrup
Danish Biographical Lexicon Education and teaching Principals
The 3rd edition of Dansk Biografisk Leksikons was published in 16 volumes in the period 1979-84 with Svend Cedergreen Bech as editor. Nearly 1,000 biographies were updated in 2014-16. The content has not been edited since. Newer articles can be found in Den Store Danske .
Peder Estrup, 6.10.1756-31.12.1818, rector, priest. Born in Nibe, died in Randers, buried sst. Es birth cost his mother his life, and when he also lost his father a few years later, he came to the house of his uncle, the later provost, mag. Christian Engelstoft who in 1772 graduated him to the university. In 1777 he took the great philological degree, in 1779 theologically certified. As a student he was known for his excellent knowledge, especially in Greek - his nickname was "Peder Grækeren" - and in 1779 he got a place at Borch's college where in 1780-82 he published three dissertations De Genio Socratis and otherwise spent some for his development significant years. In 1782 he took his master's degree with great fame and became a hearer at Our Lady's School in Copenhagen. One of his disciples, the later bishop JP Mynster, says that he was the only one of the teachers who knew how to put himself in respect, partly thanks to his great rigor. In 1788, E. became rector of Randers. He received a completely neglected school, but in a few years he succeeded in bringing it to its feet and gaining a reputation as one of the country's most excellent principals. Among the 112 disciples he graduated in 1799 was Steen Steensen Blicher who set him very high. Pedagogically, E., as personally associated with Ove Høegh-Guldberg,conservative, and when he looked with disapproval at the Duke of Augustenborg's reforms of the learned school system and even sat in very scarce conditions as principal, he sought vocation. In 1803 he became parish priest in Nykøbing F., but already turned s.å. back to Randers as parish priest at Skt. Morten's church and provost in Støvring hrd. (Provstiet he surrendered in 1812). Though held by his congregation, he never felt completely happy as a priest. The school deed had been his proper calling. Many internal and external circumstances prevented him in his later years from acting as a writer. A number of school speeches he has left behind show him as a knowledgeable, humanely educated personality. -Range with county provosts 1812.

Brockhoff, Sir Jack Stuart (1908?1984)

by Robert Murray
This article was published in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 17, (MUP), 2007

Sir Jack Stuart Brockhoff (1908-1984), manufacturer and philanthropist, was born on 11 March 1908 in South Melbourne, third and youngest son of Victorian-born parents Frederick Douglas Brockhoff (1868-1961), manufacturer, and his wife Lola Landon, née Sleight. Frederick?s father, Adolph, had migrated from Mecklenburg, Germany, to Victoria and started the biscuit-manufacturing firm A. F. Brockhoff & Co. Entering the business early in life, Frederick became governing director of the company, which was renamed Brockhoff?s Biscuits Pty Ltd. Lola, who had been born into the Sleight family of undertakers, was a woman of strong social convictions. Jack attended Wesley College. He and his brothers, Harold Frederick (1902-1966) and Alan Bruce (1904-1989), were to spend most of their working lives with the family firm, controlling it after World War II.

In a felicitous spread of abilities and interests, Harold managed the marketing side, Alan the manufacturing operation and Jack the administrative, financial and corporate functions. This split of responsibilities enabled the brothers to work together harmoniously, while keeping their distance. Each was a director in charge of his sector. Jack was also managing director and later chairman. All three had a remarkable physical resemblance, though substantial differences of personality. Staff addressed them as `Mr Jack?, `Mr Harold? and `Mr Alan?, and generally the atmosphere was friendly and paternal.

After 1945 the brothers anticipated a significant growth in demand for their products. Believing it to be economically imperative that they increase production, they purchased a large block of former market-gardening land at East Burwood in 1951 and opened an ambitious new factory there in 1953. The scale of operation allowed by the extra space and new plant gave their firm a competitive advantage and Brockhoff?s share of the market expanded at the expense of its rivals T. B. Guest & Co. Pty Ltd, Swallow & Ariell Ltd and Sunshine Biscuits Ltd.

Biscuit manufacturers mostly operated within one State but in the 1950s William Arnott Pty Ltd of Sydney began buying out or merging with interstate firms. When the American-owned Nabisco Pty Ltd entered the Australian market, Arnott?s, Brockhoff?s and Guest?s combined defensively, forming the Australian Biscuit Co. Pty Ltd, but at first keeping their operations separate. Nabisco sought to take over the publicly listed Swallow & Ariell in 1964 and Jack Brockhoff worked closely, shrewdly and courageously with Arnott?s directors to beat Nabisco in a share-market battle, acquiring Swallow & Ariell for the Australian Biscuit Co.

Realising that the day of the medium-sized, one-State manufacturer was passing, Brockhoff then led his family firm into a full merger with Arnott?s. The combined company became Arnott?s Biscuits Pty Ltd in 1966 and the Brockhoff name gradually disappeared from supermarket shelves over the next few years. Arnotts Ltd was floated as a public company in 1970. Jack retired as chairman and managing director of the Melbourne operation, Arnott-Brockhoff-Guest Pty Ltd, in 1973 but was to remain a director of Arnotts Ltd until 1984.

Reserved, introverted and markedly shy, Brockhoff was nevertheless an astute businessman and investor who was also kind and honest. Much of his wealth came from private investment, an abiding interest. He could be very generous, but abhorred waste, show or pretence. He was a life governor of the Sandringham and District Memorial Hospital, the Royal Children?s Hospital, the Burwood Boys? Home and the Victorian Civil Ambulance. In 1979 he organised a philanthropic trust, the Jack Brockhoff Foundation, and endowed it with $5 million. He was knighted that year. The foundation was dedicated to assisting `the people of Victoria?. Most of its grants were of moderate amounts disbursed to a wide range of charities, but it gave priority to helping children and the elderly, and to funding medical research.

On 14 October 1933 at St John?s Church of England, Toorak, Brockhoff had married Claire Cornelia Josephine Herd. The marriage was childless and broke down very quickly; the experience seemed to affect his personality, increasing his reserve. He lived modestly at Sandringham, a hard-drinking bachelor devoted to golf, bowls, sailing, fishing and business, and a member of numerous sporting clubs, including the Victoria Amateur Turf and the Victoria Racing clubs. Unexpectedly, on 27 June 1980 at Sandringham he married, with Uniting Church forms, Ursula Edith Lycoudis, née Hill, a widow who had recently been his housekeeper; the marriage was happy but short. Sir Jack died on 3 September 1984 at his home and was cremated. His will, sworn for probate at $7,455,835, provided the foundation with about $6 million in additional funds and almost $1 million more on the death of Lady Brockhoff in 199

A marriage
Mr. A. F.Brockhoff, of "Nithsdale," Caulfield, and Miss Lola
Sleight, second daughter of the late Augustus A. Sleight,
of " Kieta," East Melbourne, was celebrated at Trinity Church, East Melbourne, on 10th February, at 7 p.m. The service was conducted by the Rev. W. G. Hindley, of Kew.
The wedding was a quiet one, invitation being strictly confined to near relatives of the bride and bridegroom.

Mr. Joseph Summere, who presided at the organ, played
very brilliantly some charming music, including Mendelssohn's Wedding March" and the march from
"Lohengrin."
The bride was given away by her uncle, Mr. Leslie
Gregson, of Seymour, and looked very pretty in a trained robe of white brocade in a rich design ; both sleeves and yokes were of chiffon, very finely goffered.
The swathed bodice was of brocade, with a folded
waist of white satin falling in long ends at the
left side of the skirt. The double epaulettes of brocade were finished with goffered chiffon, cluster of lilies
of the valley, and ivory tinted wheatears set in rosettes
of chiffon and satin finished the dainty bodice, the
square train was lined with white silk and trimmed with bows of satin ribbon and carbon ornaments; also small sprays of lilies of the valley ; her wreath of natural orange blossom was worn under a gracefully arranged veil of fine
bridal net, fastened with a handsome diamond spray
and brooch ornament.
Tbe handsome bouquet of the choicest exotice, mixed with fairy ferns and tied with a handsome sash, was most
artistically arranged by Miss Kemp, of Collins street.

The bridesmaids were Mjes Ethel Sleight (sister of the bridegroom), who wore soft white silk skirt, deeply frilled with fine Valenciennes lace ; the bodice, also of silk, was cross draped ine front, and inserted and frilled with Valenciennes; an elegant white satin ribbon was passed round
the waist, terminating in long ends; a black picture hat was worn, with white plumes.

Miss Clara Brocbhoff?rich eau de nil brocade, handsomely
trimmed with accordeon-pleated chiffon
and pearl passementerie.
Miss Popsie Brockhoff
wore shrimp pink flnwered glace silk, with bodice
of gathered silk chiffon, pretty fichu of white silk
reaching to the hetn of her dress ; both sisters
wore picture hats, with white plumes. The bridegroom's
gifts to
the bridesmaids
were
gold
brooches, set with opals, paarls and rubies.
They
all carried pretty poseys in harmony and contrast
with their different frocks.
Tiny Kitty, Hell and
yueenie Sleight (sister of the bridt) also followed
dressed in soft white silk
Greenaway frocks,
tucued and trimmed with Valenciennes.
They
both received pretty gold initial brooches from
the bridegroom.

by Mr. Victor Seward and Mrs. S. Brunton.
Mrs. A. A. Sieigbt wore black silk, trimmed
with black accordeon chiffon and white lisse folds ;
black bonnet and white lisse. Mrs. Gregson also
wore black si'k, trimmed with chiffon and jet.

OBITUARY.
There passed away at Coolabuuia on Monday last, from pneumonia, following a brief illness, one of the districts most highly respected resident pioneers, in the person of
Mrs. Katrina Maria Bundesen, at the ripe old age of 90 years. Born in Stubeck, Sleswig,, in 1834, she came
out to Australia when a young woman, with her husband, the late Mr. Bundesen in 1870, and settled at Etchell's Falls, on the Mary River, Mr. Bundesen following farming pursuits there for a number of years. Mr. Bundesen predeceased her about 34 years ago, and his wife, after remaining about 10 more years on the farm, decided to retire and came to Coolabunia,
to reside with her children, where she remained until the time of her death. She leaves a large line of descendants, including five daughters and one son, 39 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
