Jacob Brønnum Scavenius Estrup

Statesman, Prime Minister of Denmark. He served from 11 June 1875 to 7 August 1894. Prior to becoming prime minister he became a member of the upper chamber of parliament in 1864 representing the National Landowners’ Party. In 1865 he became minister of the interior. In this position he made major improvements in the railways and in Esbjerg harbor. He influenced the writing of a new constitution which gave landowners extensive power in parliament. He then became the leader of a powerful conservative group known as Højre. Backed by the king and a majority in both chambers he became prime minister. He also became finance minister. He is best remembered for creating provisional budgets approved by the king when parliament refused to adopt his recommendations. He implemented some social reforms and the Financial Act of April 1894 containing grants for temporary military installations. He resigned in 1894 and after 23 years, he was the longest sitting Danish minister ever.
