Marseliborg Castle seen from Mindeparken (Memorial Park, Aarthus)

Memorial Park (originally name Marselisborg Memorial Park) is a park area of about 30 acres of land just south of Aarhus center. The park was inaugurated 5 July 1925 by King Christian 10

The park is located in an area between Marselisborg Castle and Aarhus Bay , and covers an area of approx. 50 acres of land.

Attached to the park's arboretum Forest Botanic Garden and Donbækhusene.

The first initiatives for the construction of Memorial Park was taken in 1905 , and the process until the final consecration has a complex history that has among its roots to the plant by Rebild where the Danish-American Rebild celebrations are held.

The original idea behind the park was that it was supposed to be a gathering place for expatriates when they were visiting the home.

The case of the construction of Memorial Park was discussed at a meeting in Aarhus City Council on 29 September 1924 . The decision was taken 23 October , and the first sod was cut 1 November of that year. The plan was that the inauguration was going to happen 5 July 1925, the Danish-Americans could participate in the festivities in Rebild the 4th July.

In Memorial Park was built a monument to the World War 1914-1918 fallen Danish, most of whom were Danish-minded Slesvigers under German military service. It is made ​​by sculptor Axel Poulsen and architect Axel Ekberg .

The monument is a circular courtyard surrounded by a euvillekalkstensmur (see limestone ). The wall is inscribed 4140 names of fallen (a total of about 170,000 letters). In addition, there are four major reliefs that symbolize Udmarchen, war, peace and homecoming.

The memorial was inaugurated 1 July 1934 . The inauguration festivities attended the royal family, Aarhus mayor HP Christensen, Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning with 50,000 people from all parts of Denmark, including 6,000 Slesvigers. (Wikipedia)
