MR. C. J. STEPHENSEN
The death occurred at Hobart recently of Christian Julius (Christy) Stephensen, aged 75. A respected pioneer of the Biggenden district, the late Mr. Stephensen was born at Tinana on October 7, 1878. His parents were Danish immigrants, who landed in Maryborough. Many of the immigrants settled at Tinana, Pialba and Tiaro. "Christy" was the eldest son of a family of nine, of whom eight were boys.
The family moved from Tinana in the early 1890?s, and followed the construction of the Gayndah line branch railway westward from Mungar Junction to Brooweena, and later to Biggenden, where they settled, and built the first house in Biggenden township.
Christy Stephensen was for 25 years secretary of the Biggenden District A. and P. Society and of the M.U.I.O.O.F. Lodge, and was at all times to the fore in public activities at Biggenden.
He was one of the party which first explored and opened out the Coalstoun Lakes district and was member of the Biggenden Light Horse Contingent, at the welcome to the Duke of York in Brisbane in 1901.
In 1900 he married Marie, daughter of Henry A. Tardcnt, who established the Biggenden State Farm. Mrs. C. J. Stephensen was for many years the Biggenden correspondent of the Maryborough Chronicle.
For the past sixteen years, Mr. C. J. Stephensen has lived at Hobart. His death is mourned by his many relatives and friends in Queensland and Tasmania

Villers-Bretonneux is a village about 15 km east of Amiens. The Memorial stands on the high ground ('Hill 104') behind the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Fouilloy, which is about 2 km north of Villers-Bretonneux on the east side of the road to Fouilloy.
The Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux is approached through the Military Cemetery, at the end of which is an open grass lawn which leads into a three-sided court. The two pavilions on the left and right are linked by the north and south walls to the back (east) wall, from which rises the focal point of the Memorial, a 105 foot tall tower, of fine ashlar. A staircase leads to an observation platform, 64 feet above the ground, from which further staircases lead to an observation room. This room contains a circular stone tablet with bronze pointers indicating the Somme villages whose names have become synonymous with battles of the Great War; other battle fields in France and Belgium in which Australians fought; and far beyond, Gallipoli and Canberra.
On the three walls, which are faced with Portland stone, are the names of 10,885 Australians who were killed in France and who have no known grave. The 'blocking course' above them bears the names of the Australian Battle Honours.
After the war an appeal in Australia raised £22,700, of which £12,500 came from Victorian school children, with the request that the majority of the funds be used to build a new school in Villers-Bretonneux. The boys' school opened in May 1927, and contains an inscription stating that the school was the gift of Victorian schoolchildren, twelve hundred of whose fathers are buried in the Villers-Bretonneux cemetery, with the names of many more recorded on the Memorial. Villers-Bretonneux is now twinned with Robinvale, Victoria, which has in its main square a memorial to the links between the two towns.

14. | Percy Reginald Stephensen (3.Christian2, 1.Sidsel1) was born 20 Nov 1901, Maryborough, Queensland, Australia.; died 28 May 1965, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Other Events:
- Education: 23 Nov 1926, Oxford University; PERCY STEPHENSEN AT
OXFORD.
Some days ago we publisned a cable from London concerning Percy Stephensen, a Brisbane University boy and Rhodes scholar, whose advanced political views had brought him into collision with the authorities of Oxford University. His grandfather, Mr. Henry A. Tardent, has handed to us copies of the reports that have been received from his different tutors at Oxford, and these indicate that Stephensen is an especially brilliant boy. The tutor in Philosophy writes, inter alia: "Mr. Stephensen has worked very well for me throughout the whole year, and he has made a very big advance. His essays show great clearness of expression, and a capacity to originality of thought and a capacity to grasp essentials. If he continues to work as thoroughly during the next two years as he has done in the past, I have strong hopes that he will do first-class work in kis final examinations. At present
he is one of the most piomising men of the year." The tutor in Economics (Mr Robbins) says: "Mr. Stephensen is one of my best pupils. He reads more economics, thinks more economics, and talks mioe economics than any other working under my direction. His essays show that he has an unusual gift of clear expression. His work thoughout the year has been characterised by originality, and it has been remarkable for the tenacity with which he has maintained a point of view which is not
that held by most modem economists. This I do not consider to be a great fault and I believe that he is capable of doing first class work in his finals." Equally sitisfactory reports have been received fiom his tutor in History, and
from the Dean of the College (Dr. Be??).
In his covering letter, Mr Tardent writes: "The reports were reeived by his parents at Biggenden, and it will be seen that although they do not share his rather advanced views on economics and politics his tutors all praise his absolute sincerity, great intellectual ability, his assiduity to and capacity for work and his exemplary conduct as a student. That exceptionally well gifted young man is held in the highest esteem by his numerous relatives and friends.
who feel justified in anticipating that now that he has been debarred from taking an active part in politics he will be able to devote the whole of his time and buoyant energy and activity to the pursuit of his University studies, and continuing in the future as in the past to do credit to all those who had a share in the education of a brilliant and promising Queensland native.

40. | Victor Cyril Stephensen (7.Martin2, 1.Sidsel1) was born 12 Sep 1906, Gayndah, Queensland, Australia; died 1984, Australia. Other Events:
- Interests: 12 Aug 1926, Melbourne; " A Brilliant Youth."
News of the success of a young Queensland pianist, Victor Cyril Stephensen, has been received from the South, and the following extract is taken from a Melbourne paper following on the recent mid winter concert of the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music 'The final item, the last movement of Schumann's Concerto for pianoforte and orchestra in A minor, was one of the best on the programme. Victor Stephensen the solo pianist is a brilliant youth, with much musical feeling. His performance was noticeable for breadth of tone and nicely turned phrases. This youth, who
is still under 2O years of age, has
already completed his first two years at the Conservatorium with honours, in addition to winning the Ormond
Exhibítion each year. He is a son of the late Mr M C Stephensen (killed in action), who as Mayor of Gayndah was well known in the Central Burnett district. His training at the Conservatorium has been made possible by the Repatriation scheme for the education of deceased soldiers' children.

VICTOR STEPHENSEN CONCERT.
Victor Stephensen, a pianist of whom Queensland has reason to be proud, will give his only recital In Brisbane before his departure for a tour of study abroad Stephensen's teachers and competent critics, who were privileged to hear his first public performance in Melbourne agreed that he is a musician of exceptional merit His first recital consisted of works by such varied composers as Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin, and he succeeded in giving an impression of maturity of style and technique of an extraordinary description. Stephensen is the son of a soldier killed in the last war, and was educated by the Repatriation Department and the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia.
Tickets may be obtained at Palings, or from the R.S.S.I.L.A. headquarters, Anzac House, Elizabeth Street, Brisbane

STEPHENSEN FUND.
The Legacy Club of Brisbane, whose president is Brigadier-General Cannan, and whose vice-presidents are Brigadier-General Wilson and Dr. Lockhart Gibson, is making an appeal for funds to enable Victor Stephensen, a young Queenslander whose father was killed in action in the Great War, to pursue his musical studies in Europe.
Victor Stephensen has been for three years studying at the Conservatorium in Melbourne, where he won several scholarships. He can go no further there, and his teachers strongly urge him to go to Europe to finish. Finance stands in the way of his doing this, and young Victor is earning what he can in Melbourne by his music. He is regarded by those competent to judge as a musical genius, and provided he can get the proper tuition will no doubt, one day, be a great credit to his native State. This is the critical stage of his career, when the best tuition available is most essential, and the Legacy Club is taking up his cause with a will, and is endeavouring to raise £250. About £45 is already in hand.
Subscriptions, no matter how large or how small, will be received gladly by Mr. F. Connan, the acting hon. secretary of the Legacy Club, Makerston-street, Brisbane, and will be acknowledged in the columns of the "Courier."
The fund now stands:

VICTOR STEPHENSEN FUND.
The Legacy Club of Brisbane has set itself the task of raising £250 to enable Victor Stephenson, a promising young Queensland pianist, to complete his musical studies in Europe. The club, whose main object is to assist the dependants of deceased and incapacitated soldiers, is composed entirely of returned men, who feel that a legacy has been left them by those who were killed during the war to look after the children, and practical help in the form of subscriptions to the Victor Stephensen Fund will be greatly appreciated by every member of the club. Stephensen has just finished a three-years course of study at the Conservatorium for Music in Melbourne, and the time has arrived, when, if he is to get the best out of his career, he must go to Europe to complete his musical studies. His tutors in Melbourne strongly urge him to do this, but lack of funds stands in the way. He is endeavouring to raise money for that purpose in Melbourne, not by appealing for subscriptions, but by working assiduously at his music in giving recitals, and playing at various shows, and the Legacy Club, knowing that he is a trier, are doing their utmost to make his path a little easier. Subscriptions sent to Mr. F. Connah, care of Crouch and Connah, Ltd., Makerston-street, Brisbane, acting hon, secretary of the Legacy Club, will be gratefully received, and will be acknowledged in the columns of the "Courier."
The fund now stands as under:
Previously acknowledged . £40. 6. 0 Emily I. Tubb. 1.1.0
