Marco Polo Chronicle?, Marco Polo, 1854
Many 19th century passenger ships produced shipboard newspapers. These were often handwritten and illustrated on the voyage and then published and printed on arrival (see the ?Somersetshire Times?). The ?Marco Polo Chronicle? however, was printed weekly on board ship, on a press belonging to the ship owners, Messrs James Baines & Co. The newspaper was distributed free of charge, and enough copies were printed to ensure wide circulation. The complete series could be guaranteed by a subscription fee of one shilling.
The La Trobe Australian Manuscripts Collection holds eight issues of the newspaper produced between July and September 1854, during the Marco Polo?s fourth voyage to Australia. As the passenger lists for this voyage have been lost, the newspaper is particularly valuable and provides an insight into shipboard life and the activities of both passengers and crew on a typical "clipper" sailing ship of the goldrush period.
The issue featured here is dated Saturday, 26 August 1854. It describes "Crossing the Line" celebrations, a colourful feature of every voyage south; a "Poets? Corner", featuring a poem by the ship?s assistant surgeon; and a description of "The Motleys of Melbourne" to prepare "new chums" for their arrival in Melbourne. Many of the immigrants on this voyage were heading for the lure of the Victorian Goldfields and their chance to make a fortune or just a new start in life.
