ALLEGED BREACH OF THE LICENSING ACT.
On Tuesday lost Jeremiah Scanlan, landlord of the " Strangers' Home," Fortitude Valley, appeared to answer an information exhibited by the Chief Constable, charging him with having sold liquors on a Sunday to Edmund Hughes and William Wing. Mr. Little, who appeared for the defendant, ohjested to the information, in which the sign of the public house was erroneously stated to be the " Traveller's Home." The Bench held the objection fatal, and threw out the information.

Jeremiah Scanlan next applied for a license for the " Strangers' 'Home," at Fortitude Valley. The applicant now produced certificates in his favour nom a number of persons ķesiding in the neighbourhood of the house. The application was opposed'by'a Mr. Jumes Sloman, who, however, objected at first to being sworn, until convinced that the Act of Council required it. Being then examined on oath by Mr. Little, for the applicant, he stated that he resided in the parish ot Bulimba, which was at a long distance nom Fortitude Valley, and on the opposite side of the river. Mr. Little at once submitted that the objector could not be heard, as he did not come w ithin either of the descriptions required by the 18th section of the Act, being neither a person residing in the neighbourhood of the house to be licensed, a holder of or applicant for a license, nor a Chief Constable or Inspector of Police The Magistrates immediately held Mr. Little's objection valid, as the words of the Act are distinct, and declined to hear Mr. Sloman. The certificate was then granted.
