Claude Bate (Q24377) enlisted in the AIF in Brisbane on 20 September 1918 when he was 18 years 6 months old. He was a farming assistant at Maleny and was sole supporter of his mother. 2/6 per day was paid from Claude's army pay to his mother, Emily Elizabeth Bate who had given her permission to Claude's enlistment. He undertook his military training at Enoggera Army Base but records do not indicate if he served overseas.

    MALENY, October 15.
The returned soldiers of the district gave a public send-off to Private Claude Bate in the School of Arts, Maleny, on 10th instant. Mr J.D. Gay (chairman of the Landsborough Shire Council), on behalf of the returned soldiers, presented Private Bate with a wristlet watch and a gold medal. Miss Gertrude Bate fastened on the watch and medal, whilst the gathering sang "Soldiers of the King". Mr N Alcorn said, as a returned soldier, he felt it very keenly to see lads of only 18 1/2 years enlisting, when there were plenty of men 21years and upwards who could go. Mr Cooke, on behalf of the Patriotic Committee, presented Private Bate with a gold medal. Songs were rendered by Mrs Breusch, Miss I. Bryce, and Mr Findlay. The dance music was supplied by Miss I. Gorman, assisted by Mrs Breusch and Miss I. Cooke.
