      Wikipedia

Johannes Frederik (Frits) Christian Uldall ( 11 February 1839 in Fredericia - 21 February 1921 in Randers ) was a Danish architect and archaeologist.

      Biography

Uldall was the son of a city physicist, later state councilor Frederik Adolph Uldall and Elisabeth Johanne Sophie Sick. After graduating from Sorø Academy in 1856 , Frits Uldall became a workshop student at the Polytechnic . Trained carpenter in 1859 . In parallel, he was at the Academy of Fine Arts' School of Architecture in the years 1857 -63. At the same time he drew with Chr. Hansen and since at JD Herholdt for 4 years. Uldall was a second lieutenant in the war of 1864 .

After the war, Uldall was employed as a draftsman at Peto, Brassey & Betts , the head office for the construction of the Jutland-Funen railways 1865 - 1867 . From 1868 he had his own drawing room. He also ran a drawing school for young craftsmen. He was a surveyor for churches and parsonages in different Jutland deaneries and 1871 - 88 Supervisor churches in Northern Jutland . He was also a member of the board of directors for the Preservation of the Antiquarian Memorials, as well as of the Royal Old Norse Museum. He was a Knight of Dannebrog .

Frits Uldall was strongly interested in history and over the years made many trips around Jutland and abroad, where he sketched and drew churches and other building details, which he later used as templates for individual elements in his architectural assignments. He thus traveled to Tyrol and Rome 1867-68, Germany and Austria 1878, Sweden 1883, the Rhineland , the Netherlands and Belgium 1886, Stockholm 1896, Germany 1898, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905, 1908, Lübeck 1899 and Germany, Gotland and Stockholm 1910

Through its scholarship (1869), the Academy of Fine Arts provided support for studies of village churches, and the Carlsberg Foundation for the study of old church bells in Scania , Halland , Blekinge and Southern Jutland.. He received support from the Danish state 1886-87 and several times since. As a restoration architect, he was still influenced by the philosophy that any old building should be sought to be brought back to its original appearance. The numerous renovations of churches and other buildings therefore did not take place on the basis of documented studies. Uldall was also interested in prehistoric archeology and worked for the National Museum with drawing on maps of prehistoric memories, and he participated in the nationwide county descriptions.

He received a silver medal from the Dutch government for the work Nederlandsche Kerkklokken in Denemarken , 1894.

Uldall was a Freemason and together with Eggert Achen designed the Danish Masonic Order's lodge building in Randers . [1]

Uldall married for the first time on 6 June 1866 in Butterup Henriette Sophie Torst (30 October 1844 in Løvenborg - 10 March 1874 in Randers), daughter of estate administrator, Justice Frederik Christian T. and Johanne Margrethe Neergaard. 2nd marriage was entered into on 1 June 1875 in Mejlby with Inger Kirstine Mohnsen (23 March 1850 in Kalstrup , Øster Lisbjerg Herred-19 October 1940 in Copenhagen), daughter of owner Mogens Christensen M. and Else Jensdatter Grosen. He is buried in Randers.
