    DEATH OF MR. M. MELLOR.
The sad news was received late last even ing of the death of Mr. Matthew Mellor, an old resident of Gympie, and one who had sat in the Legislative Assembly both for that electorate and for Wide Bay. Mr. Mellor, who had been in ill-health for some little time, came to Brisbane on Monday last for medical advice. He went into St. Clair Hospital on Thursday and an operation was performed with apparent success that day. The patient passed a good night ; but yesterday morning he became worse, and died from heart failure at 11 o'clock last night. He leaves a widow and family of seven, besides a very large circle of friends, both in Gympie and in other parts of the colony. He was born in Staffordshire in 1839, and was within a few months of completing his sixtieth year. He came to the colony in 1863, and at first engaged in farming on the Logan. He was one of the earliest residents on Gympie, and was its first mayor, holding the office for three years, and again in Jubilee year. He was also chairman of the Widgee Divisional Board. Mr. Mellor was largely interested in mining and pastoral pursuits, and was for many years chairman of the North Glanmire Company. It is probable that the remains will be removed to Gympie for burial.
