    SEASON IN THE MALLEE.
Mr. W. P. Toner, who has been shearing in different parts of the Mallee since August last, returned to Warracknabeal a few days ago. He travalled over a large area of country, and furnishes information with regard to the state of the crops, and the effects of the long period of dry weather. From Warracknabeal to Watchem the season has proved disastrous.

In the Corack district there is a little feed for stock, while the crops, are holding out well. Some of them are particularly good, bearing in mind the adverse climatic conditions, and if rain falls, soon enough will give fair returns. Even without rain Mr. Toner says , there will be a little crop and hay.

About Birchip, and through to Wycheproof and Quambatook the country shows the blighting effects of the season. Feed has given out, and the harvest will be poor. There are some fair crops from Quambatook through to Kerang, but from there to Deniliquin the paddocks are as bare as they were during the drought of 1902. Before shearing bullock wagons were employed carting feed to stock, aud now there is hardly a hoof to be seen in that part of the country, the whole of the stock having been removed. Despite the character of the season Mr. Toner states that the sheep at the Quambatook shed, which was the last place at which he was shearing, were in splendid condition and fit for the Melbourne market. At other sheds they proved to be very weak; after their fleeces were removed.

The crops which are holding out best are almost without exception those on sandy land. Shortage of water is becoming a serious matter in some of the mallee towns. At Quambatook the supply has practically given out. When Mr. Toner and party reached there they were compelled to take their horses two miles out of the town In order to give them water. Channels are being cut from a swamp seven miles out to convey water to the town, but even when this scheme is carried out, the supply will not last long. At Wycheproof the town water supply, is restricted to an hour every morning.

    FOUR SONS ENLIST.
Mr. and Mrs. W. Toner, of Warracknabeal, have given their last too sons to the service of their country. William and Michael recently joined the colors. and they are now in camp at Castlemaine. This makes a total of four sons engaged in military service. In consenting to the enlistment of the whole of their sons, Mr. and Mrs. Toner have shown the utmuost patriotism and sacrifice, more especially as, they are getting up in years, and are utterly dependant upon their boys. It is to be hoped that these valiant young men will be sparedto return to Warracknabeal. Their fine example is worthy of emulation by others who are more favorably circumstanced.
