Cutter And Side Rake For Peanut Harvest
A Peanut harvest experiment with cutter and side delivery rake will be carried out on Mr. W. G. Jessen's Wooroolin property this month. Pictured here is the 11 acres of stooked peanuts cut by peanut puller which has been used to effect in the South Burnett.
Mr. Jessen will try a new method which is finding favour, using the peanut cutter from the front of the tractor and following with side delivery rake.
Mr. Jessen maintains that the latter method is much cheaper, a delivery rake costing only about £130 compared with £150 for a mechanical puller.
He has noted that the puller has limitations with the smaller bushes, tending to leave them un touched.
His crop was planted in November 1962, and pulled by peanut puller about the middle of April, This crop is expected to go about 20 threshed bags to the acre.
Alongside them is the latest crop which will be cut by the new method about the middle of this month. Mr. Jessen has planted wheat between the stooked peanuts to hold the ground in storm rain conditions.
Maize is planted after wheat in a rotational programme which has been of great benefit to the farm income.
