      A Golden Wedding

On Thursday last an interesting golden wedding was celebrated in a pleasant way by the descendants of the old couple. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cramb, tendering them a great surprise party. It seems a long time ago that the marriage was registered of Joseph Cramb fifth son of John Cramb of Perthshire, to Mary Dane, second daughter of Charles Dane of Inniskillen, the data being 11th June 1853. The then young couple set out with little delay, and arrived in Queensland the following year, and now, after proving worthy settlers, they have at the age of 74 and 73 respectively 32 grandchildren. Their own family was six sons and one daughter, most of whom are well known in this district. As a proof of the heartiness of the old people, foot races were arranged, and in the first sprint of 100 yards, Mr. Cramb, senr., took eight yards of a start and won easily from his son Nathaniel Cramb, of Nambour, contractor. Later on, he also took five yards and again won. There is little doubt that fifty years ago the settlers who were induced to come to Queensland were the right sort for a young country. When we consider the conditions both of travel and of everything else, wo marvel at the stoutness of the hearts of those who made what was then a great venture.
