TRAGEDY AT SCARNESS Motor Cyclist Hits Horse ; Fatally Injured
INJURIES which earned his death in the Maryborough General Hospital yesterday morning were suffered by Mr. Edward Maike (36), of Urraween, who, while riding a motor cycle at Scarness on Saturday evening, collided with a horse.
After the accident Mr. Maike complained of severe pain in the back, and it was revealed later that he had suffered a fracture and dislocation of the spine near the neck. Mr. Maike resided with his father and two brothers at Urraween. About 5.30 o'clock on Saturday evening he was riding his motor cycle along Queen-street, between the esplanade and the railway station, travelling to wards the railway station. There were four horses on the road, and as the motor cyclist approached one of the animals ran in front of him. He collided with it side on, and was thrown heavilv to the road. The horse fell with him.
Dr. Webb and Constable Fursman were on the scene almost immediately, and after the doctor had rendered first aid to Mr. Maike, who complained of a back injury, the Maryborough ambulance was summoned and the sufferer was conveyed to the General Hospital. He succumbed at ten o'clock yesterday morning.
The late Mr. Maike was born at Maryborough. He was the son of Mr. William Maike, who carries on a farm at Urraween. In addition to his father he is survived by two brothers-Messrs. George and Robert Maike-and one sister. Mrs. Annie Austin. All are residents of Urraween. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2.30 o'clock from Mr. William Maike's residence to the Nikenbah Cemetery.
The accident emphasises the danger of allowining cattle end horses to stray on the roads where traffic is heavy. j There are nearly always a few animals to be found wandering around the esplanade and other busy roads at the Bay.
