A transfer of 154 Acres 3 Rood 30 Perches (CA11, Sec.1, Jallukar) from Archibald EMERSON to Arthur HOLD, Farmer, Jallukar during the week ending Saturday 3 January 1885.
(Victoria Government Gazette - Online Archive - 1885, p195)
Arthur Hold, Farmer, Bellellan. 2 Feb 1892. Taken from a form which Arthur filled in , detailing the improvements which he had made on his seletion.
At this date Arthur had fenced one hundred and eighty six and a half chains of his seclection , at a cost of Five Shillings and Sixpence a chain. The total cost was Fifty Three Pounds. The cost of the posts and wire Thirty One Pounds.
In the second year, Arthur planted one acres of Vines at a cost of Seven Pounds and Ten Shillings
There are no entries for the third and fourth years.
In the fifth year,he planted three acers of fruit trees at a cost of Forty Two Pounds. These were destroyed by rabbits.
The sixth year; Three acres of vines were planted, the cost of which was again Forty Two Pounds. He also bought half a ton of hay, either for his horses or cattle. Arthur now had seven acres cultivated. Total time Seven Years .This would mean Arthur obtained this selection in 1895.
The dwelling which Arthur had constructed, consisted of two rooms and a kitchen. It was made with weatherboards, which cost One Hundred and Thirty Pounds. The cost of the iron roof was Fifteen Pounds.
For his water supply. he had dug two wells, one twenty feet deep, and the other eighteen feet, at a cost of Forty Six Pounds. The water was very close to the surface.
The ringbarking and clearing of the trees was another expence. Twelve Pounds.
Arthur and his family had only lived continuously on this land for two years. He had previously held one hundred and fifty five acres of land, which he had sold owing to the loss incurred from bush fires and rabbits.
Much of his land was unfit for cultivation. This was typical of the land around the Stawell District. The soil was very sandy and of poor quality.
Arthur was supposed to have all his land enclosed by the sixth year, but had not complied owing to a lack of money and time. At this time Arthur and Victorine had four children.Arthur, William Louis , Julius and Louis . Josephine arrived arrived in 1890 as well.

29: Hold, Alfred, Nov 1900 - 1902: Date of Birth: 19/8/1896
The next event that is known of Arthur`s farming , is a letter he wrote to the Secretary of the Lands Department in Melbourne, dated June 27th.,1901.
Due to his destitute circumstances, Arthur was utterly unable to pay the rents due on his selection. His health had not been good. The land was to poor to give returns. He had planted fourteen acres of fruit trees and vines, but as yet they were still young so they yielded little.
Arthur had paid One Hundred Pounds in land rents earlier, on his three hundred and twenty acres. He asked if this could go towards making one hundred acres freehold. he wished to abandon the rest.
Quoting Arthur directly from his letter," I am unable to work to provide for my family, but if you would kindly make me this concession, I may be able to make a living when my orchard comes into bearing. Trusting you will grant my request.
I have the honour to be your obedient servant,
Arthur Hold".
It is not known if Arthur`s request was granted.
Arthur must have been very dispondent. He was not alone though, for there were many selectors who were unable to pay their rents. Bushfires and poor soil, droughts and rabbits were all great problems in the Stawell district.
In January 1887. William Hold, wrote to the Lands Department. Quoting from his letter, " I am sorry that I cannot comply with your wish by sending you the money at once. , for the grasshoppers destroyed the 'ole of my crops"
Arthur and Victoria Hold are lisrted on the 1903 Electoral Roll for Victoria. They were living at Mt Mistake. Arthur Hold's occupation was labourer.
Arthur left Victoria for Queensland with his children, but without his wife Victorine, after 1903 and before the 4th. Dec 1906, when he received a grant of land in Warra near Jandowae. This is not very far from Dalby or Toowoomba. Arthur and his family were in Dalby when he applied for the grant.
The family travelled to Queensland by horse and wagon. They must have had many adventures. It is known a horse died on the way. It would have been a great relief to reach the end of their long journey.
