HOTEL BURNT AT MARYBOROUGH.
MARYBOROUGH, March l8.
The Railway Hotel was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, but it apparently started in the back portion of the building, and the wooden structure was soon a mass of flames Only the lieensee (Mr. W. Merrin), a boarder, and two maids were in the hotel at the time, Mrs. Merrin and the family being absent at Pialba. Mr T Short's areated water factory, adjoining, was for some time in danger owing to the strong breeze, but the efforts of the fire brigade saved the factory, with little damage beyond that caused by flooding. The hotel was one of the oldest two storied buildings in Maryborough, and was owned by the trustees of the late Mr. Beirs. It was one of seven ordered by the court to be closed in accordance with the previsions of the the recent local option poll, which decided in favour of reduction in the Maryborough area. The term of it's license expires in June next. The amount of the insurance cannot yet be ascertained, but it is understood both Mr. Merrin and the trustees of the estate are heavy losers.

HOTEL LICENSE LAPSES.
MARYBOROUGH, May 15
The license of the Railway Hotel from today ceased to exist in consequence of the withdrawal of the application for a renewal bv the licencee, Walter Merrin, The hotel was destroyed by fire in March last, and objection against the renewal of the license was lodged by the licensing inspector in the Licensing Court, on the grounds that the premises were not likely to be rebuilt. This was one of the five hotels which, on December, 1919, will be closed under the provisions of the Local Option Act, and it was intimated in court today that a compromise had been arrived at between the owner and lessee.
The Brisbane Courier, Queensland, Monday, 20 May 1918
It would be interesting to know if the Railway Hotel, of which the licensee when it was burnt down was Walter Merrin, was identical with the Elephant and Castle.
