Sir,-With your kind permission I should like to further reply to your own correspondent's letter from Deborah on 22nd September with reference to the part of his letter dealing with dairying matters. There are only Mr. Wade and Mr. Jessen in this neighbourhood with anything like 100 to 120 milkers, and the former has sometimes made £15 a week for dairy produce, as well as mobs of fats he has sold from time to time to the butchers. Mr. Jessen sells "abundance" of butter, as "your own" terms it, regularly at top prices, so that does not correspond with "your own's" statement that they barely make enough for their own use. I suppose I must be one of the industrious men who looks after his cows, sincc I get 88 gallons per day from 20 cows. Let your correspondent beat that if he can. I did not lose a beast during the drought, and "your own" lost nine of his best milkers, so I think he should look after his own cows and grow fodder for them instead of giving advice to his neighbours. It would be better if "your own" confined himself to the truth, and not misrepresent this district, as he is in the habit of doing, to suit his own spiteful ends.
    I am, &c.,
    Andrew Thompson.

    LETTERS-FROM THE FRONT.
Mr. Andrew Thompson of Deborah, via Tiaro, has received several post cards from his son at the Dardanelles, written on old pieces of cardboard from cigarette boxes, in which he states he is quite well and that they are living in holes in the ground, and they have plenty of clothes and tucker.

    THE ALIEN PARENTAGE PROBLEM.
    (To the Editor).
Sir,-In a letter from "Your Own Theebine Correspondent" in last Thursday's "Chronicle," I saw that Mr. R. Hoffman had tried to enlist, but was rejected on account of his German parentage. Now, sir, there is something very wrong about our recruiting. Two of my sons have enlisted; one of them had, four months in the trenches on Gallipoli Peninsula, and the other has been in camp at Enoggera for three months, and yet R. Hoffman's mother is my sister. His father was certainly born in Germany, but he arrived in Maryborough in the year 1871, and became a British subject shortly after wards by naturalization, and I have heard him declare that he was reared under the iron heel of Germany. He knows what it is; he has no desire to go, back, nor to see Australia come under Germany. When he got naturalized he ceased to be a German, and became a loyal British subject. About a fortnight ago I received a letter from my sister telling me that their son Rudolph had been home to ask his parents' consent to enlist, and that they could only say yes. He wanted the address of my son at Enoggera so that when he got down there he could look up his cousin. I felt proud of my young nephew then, and I am sorry for him now. I know there are Germans here who are not loyal; for such I have no time. If I had my way I would make them pack up their swag and send them back to Germany. They have no business here. Now, sir, I think it is quite easy to find out who are loyal and who are not. If the local police and Shire Councils were consulted I am sure they would know, and if such young men as Rudolph Hoffman and his brother Andrew were allowed to go to the front, I am certain their behaviour would be such that we would have reason to be just as proud of them as we are of our boys who went to Gallipoli. Hoping you will find room for this in your columns, and thanking you in anticipation.-I am, etc,.

Obituary 9 Aug 1932  Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland Find all individuals with events at this location
    MR. ANDREAS THOMSEN.

There passed away at the Maryborough General Hospital, on April 4, 1932, an old pioneer, of the district, in the person of Mr. Andreas Thomsen, late of Deborah. The deceased came out to Queensland in the good ship "Herschel," which sailed from Hamburg on November 24, 1871, and arrived at Maryborough on March 13, 1872. He commenced work at Gootchie as a groom for Cobb & Co., and also followed other occupations at the same centre. He was one of the first men to fall scrub on Mt.Banple.

Later on he worked at road construction, which occupation frequently took him many miles from his home. In this pursuit he has left his mark in the world as being one of the men who constructed a stone culvert, on the Fawley Range, about 15 miles from the old Teebar Homestead,on the old coach road from Boubyjan to Maryborough, and this culvert is still in a state of good repair. As far as can be ascertained from data gathered this work was done in the year 1875.

For some considerable time he was a carrier to Gympie before the railway line to that town was constructed. Later he took up land and settled on the Mary River at Deborah, where he helped, many a beginner who was struggling against adverse conditions.

Here he commenced breeding horses, which were soon in great demand, owing to their sterling qualities, and as a horse-breeder he was enabled to assist needy neighbours who were in want of horseflesh, (reliable horses at this time were beyond the means). On this farm he lived until a short time time prior to his death, having shifted into Maryborough. He is survived by a sorrowing wife, three sons and two daughters
