Headstones |
| Dunlop, Jane (nee McFadzean) and Margaret Fletcher Hankinson (nee Fletcher) NAMBOUR CHRONICLE 28th March 1967, page 3.
_____
More Old Graves.
Two old graves of interest equal to those unmarked ones at Coochin Creek are in the grounds of Maleny School.
The tennis courts have encroached on the actual graves, but the headstones can be seen between the tennis courts and the fence bordering Bunya Street. Inscribed on one of these is the following epitaph:
"In loving Memory of Our Beloved Mother, Jane Dunlop. Born Scotland 16 May, 1827. Died Maleny, August 3, 1886. Also to our beloved Uncle, Francis Dunlop, Died July 9, 1941, aged 83 years. Jane Dunlop came to the Range now known as Maleny in 1876, being the first white woman to reside there."
On the other stone is carved, "In Loving Memory of Our Dear Mother, Margaret Fletcher Hankinson, Died October 3, 1886, Aged 44 years. Mother."
These graves are on land which belonged to some of Maleny's earliest settlers and until a compatatively few years ago, the old Dunlop home still stood amongst the Bunya pines after which the street is named. Many descendants of these pioneers still live at Maleny. |
