      Wikipedia

Marius Godskesen ( July 7, 1861 in Sønderho - April 3, 1937 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish court lawyer and mayor of Frederiksberg from 1909 to 1936 . He was the father of the sculptor Helene Godskesen .

He was the son of customs treasurer, later state councilor Jens Grethenius Godskesen (1830-1917) and Nissine Johannette Ingeborg Møller (1831-1918), became a student from Sorø Academy in 1879 and took a law degree in 1884 . From 1888 he was a court lawyer in Copenhagen .

He was early politically active in the conservative direction as a right-winger . As a leading senior in the Student Association ( 1885 - 87 ), he joined HOG Ellinger and HCA Lund in leading the students' tribute to JBS Estrup after the attempted assassination in 1885 . 1887- 89 , he was president of the Student Association's Finance Committee, and he took both then and since part of the conservative organization work in the capital.

In 1908 he was elected to Frederiksberg Municipal Council , where he already the following year became chairman (from 1915 as a representative of the Conservative People's Party ). When Frederiksberg was considered a market town according to a new market town municipality law from 1919 , he was elected as Frederiksberg's first mayor, which position he held until 1936. From 1913 and until 1936 he also sat in the Landsting , from 1918 as a member and became deputy chairman in 1932 .

Godskesen was from 1923 chairman of Frederiksberg Kirkefond, from 1930 a member of the board of Kjøbenhavns Telefon Aktieselskab and from 1933 a member of Hypotekbanken's supervisory board. As chairman of Soransk Samfund ( 1901 -08), he and Professor Martin Nyrop took the initiative for the collection, through which they succeeded in acquiring the then almost dilapidated Tersløsegaard , which was restored and founded as a self-sustaining foundation in memory of Ludvig Holberg . After Nyrop's death, Godskesen ( 1921 ) became chairman of the foundation. This year he also became a Knight of Dannebrog and in1924 Dannebrogsmand and 1931 Commander of 2nd degree.

He was married for the first time on 17 April 1889 in Hjørring to Elisabeth Ingeborg Birgitte Rump (9 January 1865 in Copenhagen - 25 October 1913 in Frederiksberg), daughter of M.Sc., later Minister of Justice Nicolai Reimer Rump and wife.

2nd time he married 17 July 1920 at Frederiksberg Augusta Emilie Lassen (12 August 1875 at Louiseholm at Jægerspris - 24 November 1967), daughter of tenant, later captain, lawyer Knud Søren Christian Lassen (1843-1919) and Emilie Alvilde Selchau Hansen (1849-1921).

A square in Frederiksberg, Borgmester Godskesens Plads , bears his name. On the square is the sculpture The Dance by Johannes C. Bjerg . [1]

At Frederiksberg City Hall there is a portrait painting of Godskesen by Herman Vedel .

In 1908 he was elected to Frbg. municipal council whose chairman he became already the following year. By the change in the government of the municipality in 1919, he became its first mayor and held this post until 30.9.1936. He then remained on the municipal council as a non-executive member until 31.3.37, a few days before his death. He was thus for many years Frbg. the mayor of the municipality, a politician and administrator of the old school, somewhat stiff and steep, but highly respected. During this period there were profound changes in the municipality's administration, in 1910 the technical administration was changed, in 1911 the municipality took over the electricity plants, in 1919 Frederiksberg gymnasium, in 1921 the gas plant, etc. The hospital system was expanded, sports and park facilities were arranged, etc. The municipal co-operation with Copenhagen was expanded, especially during the First World War, but G. made sure that Frbg. was not too closely linked to the large Social Democrat-dominated neighboring municipality. 1913-36 G. was a member of the county council whose deputy chairman he was 1932-36. Here he dealt mainly with legal and municipal issues. In 1915 he voted against the constitutional amendment.
