Hans Thorvald Olrik (born 12 July 1862 in Copenhagen , died 12 June 1924 at the same place) was a Danish historian and schoolman, son of the artist Henrik Olrik , brother of Benedicte Olrik (married Brummer), Dagmar , Eyvind , Axel , Jørgen and Povl Olrik .
Hans Olrik became a student in 1879 and cand.theol. in 1885 . Based on church history , he entered a thorough study of Denmark's history in the older Middle Ages , about which he has written Knud Lavard's Life and Deeds ( 1888 ), "Bishop Valdemar and the Danish Crown" in Yearbooks for Nordic Antiquity and History ( 1892 ) , "To enslydende danske Kongebreve fra 1230" trykt i samme tidskrift ( 1895 ), "Bidrag til Belysning af Valdemarssønnernes Tidsalder" i Historisk Tidsskrift( 1897 ), Absalon I-II ( 1908 - 1909 ), Abbot Vilhelm af Æbelholt ( 1912 ) and Ridderliv og Korstogskultur ( 1921 ). He has also translated Danske Helgeners Levned ( 1893 - 1894 ).
His main work was King and Priesthood in the Danish Middle Ages in two volumes ( 1892 - 1895 ), whose first volume was the dissertation that Olrik became dr.phil. on, and was a critical and insightful account of the whole subject.
From an early age, Olrik worked as a teacher and from 1891 was a member of the Commission for the School Teacher Exam . In 1893 the Ministry of Culture sent him abroad to study seminary teaching; in a travelogue from 1895 he wrote about Higher Seminars in France and Germany as well as Continuation Courses in Switzerland and Austria , and he also wrote a draft plan for a similar arrangement for Denmark . It was not implemented. In 1895, Olrik became headmaster of the Statens Lærerkursus , which under his leadership became a major part of the Danish teacher's education. From 1906 the course was calledStatens Lærerhøjskole .
From 1897 Olrik was secretary of the Danish branch of the Letterstedtska association , and in 1911 - 1920 he was chairman of the Danish Historical Association . He became a member of the Royal Danish Society for the History of the Fatherland on 18 April 1904 .
Olrik, who became titular professor in 1894 , knight of Dannebrog in 1901 and Dannebrogsmand in 1920 , married on 27 May 1887 to pianist Elisabeth Cathrine Bruun, daughter of adjustment master Ernst Bruun . After her death ( April 7, 1896 ), he married Dagmar Hansen on January 29, 1898 .
Olrik is reproduced in pencil drawing by Henrik Olrik 1864 (in family ownership). Painting of the same approx. 1864 as well. Drawings of the same 1874, 76 and 77. Painting by Benedicte Brummer 1908 (in family ownership) and by Sigurd Wandel 1921 at Statens Lærerhøjskole .
