MOTORING ACCIDENT
Mishap at Conara
Occupants Injured
A serious accident occurred on the Hobart-Launceston Main Road, one mile south of Conara at 3.40 o'clock on Monday afternoon. A two-seater car, driven by Mr. Andrew Michel, of
Hobart, and containing five passengers, overturned. All the occupants were thrown out, and Mr. Michel was later admitted to the Campbell Town Hospital in a serious condition, and his wife was also admitted. The others escaped with shook and bruises. The passengers were, besides the driver, his wife (Mrs. Michel), his daughter, Norma, aged 12, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Frahm, and Miss Hilda Wood, all of whom belong
to Hobart.
The party were returning from Launceston to Hobart, and when approaching a sharp turn south of Conara, it is stated, they passed another car, and were driving slowly. Mr. Michel's car, however, refused to take the turn, jumped the side of the road, and rolled down the embankment. All the occupants of the car were thrown out, and the car righted itself and crashed against the fence bordering the road.
Fortunately the engine was switched off.
Other cars were soon on the scene, and It was quickly realised the Mr. Michel's Injuries were serious. He was
taken to the Campbell Town Hospital, and on inquiry last night it was stated that he was suffering from internal
chest injuries and severe lacerations to his hands and ears. His condition is regarded as serious. Mrs. Michel is
suffering from severe lacerations, but her condition is fair. Mr. and Mrs. Frahm, Miss Wood, and Norma Michel
were all badly bruised, and suffered from shock.
The cause of the accident is not known. It is thought that the brakes on the front wheels of the car locked and when negotiating the turn the steering gear refused to function. The car was badly damaged.
