    DEATH OF A PIONEER
MAN WHO WAS STOLEN BY BLACKS.
Mr. Donald Sinclair, of St. Peters,
who died on July 29, had many adventures. He was born at Mount Barker
on December 15, 1842. His father, Mr.
James Sinclair, of Green Patch, Port
Lincoln, with his wife and Mr. James
Sinclair, now of Green Patch, Port
Lincoln (son), Mr. Donald Sinclair and
Mrs. W. H. Hall, of Toorak (daughter),
left Mount Barker in 1845,with a flock of sheep, bullock dray and team, all their chattels, and one man, and
began the long trek to Port Lincoln,
travelling over some of the richest pastures between Mount Barker and Port
    Augusta. Blacks were numerous, and
they carried their lives in their hands
from day to day. Signal fires were
made by the natives announcing announcing the route of the party.

Passing the head of the gulf, at Port
    Augusta, the party journeyed through
the Gawler Ranges to the west coast,
following the coast to Coffins Bay,
    where they established a temporary
station. There the blacks stole young
Donald, and had him in their camp for
a day before he was recovered. From
there the travellers went via Little
Swamp to Uley, where they settled.

About 1854 or 1855 the explorer,
    John Donald Stuart, engaged himself
to Mr. Sinclair as bookkeeper and tutor
to the children. Mr. Sinclair then took
up Crown land at Green Patch, and
    ibuiJfc a commodious homestead and
    station, where he lived.

The late Mr. Donald Sinclair left
Port Lincoln in 1877, to take 25,000
sheep from Canawie Station to Milo
    Station, Queensland. Afterwards he
    managed the Avenue Station, Milliaent
for four years, and then went to manage Andawooka Station (north). From there he took over and owned, the Paringa Station until the Government cut it up. He then became pastoral valuator to Elder, Smith & Co., and left that firm fo take the management of Willowie Station, Melrose, which he retained for nine years. His eyesight failed, and he retired, and settled in St. Peters.

The death was reported on Saturday, July 29, at St. Peters, in the person of Mr Donald Sinclair, one of the oldest identities of the Port Lincoln district. The late Mr Sinclair together with his father and mother, brothers and sisters left Mount Barker (where he was born) in 1845 for Port Lincoln, where the deceased's parents intended to take up grazing properties. The party
started with a dock of sheep, bullock
dray and team, with their worldly
possessions aud one man on their long trek to Port Lincoln, travelling via Port Augusta and the Gawler Ranges. A temporary station was first established at Coffins Bay, and it was here that the subject of this sketch was stolen by the blacks, but was fortunately recovered the next day unharmed. The next venture was Ully station where the party settled for some years. The explorer, Mr John McDouall Stuart, was at one time bookkeeper on the station
and acted as tutor to the children.
The family afterwards took up land
at Green Patch, whore a commodious
    homestead and station was established.
The late Mr Donald Sinclair left the
Port Lincoln district about 1877 to
take a mob of about 25,000 sheep
from Cannowie to Milo station in
    Queensland, afterwards he managed
    several large pastoral properties with
    conspicous ability, finally taking
    over the management of Willowie
    station, Melrose. His eye sight
failing, he retired and settled at St.
Peters. The late Mr Sinclair was
