    Fatal Accident
    MOTOR CYCLE HAD NO HEADLIGHT
The district coroner (Mr. W. J. McDonald), after conducting an enquiry into the death of George Henry Geach following a collision between a motor cyle ridden by deceased, and a motor lorry driven by Bertram Henry Chalker, near Bong Bong Bridge on 15th April, returned a verdict of death from injuries accidently received. He added a rider that the deceased was driving his motor cycle without a headlight operating and was travelling at such a high speed as to be dangerous to both himself and the public generally, travelling the roadway, at the time of the accident. In his summing up, the coroner said he must first give consideration to the fact that the motor cycle at the lime of collision, was being driven by deceased without a headlight operating. Secondly, the speed appeared to be excessive, especially at night time and without a headlight to warn approaching vehicles. Thirdly, the excessive rate of speed was supported by the fact that the pillion rider was thrown 66ft feet from the place of impact before striking the ground, and the impact of the cycle swerved the heavy lorry directly across the roadway.

The coroner said he wished to make his opinion clear concerning road accidents as he was a strong believer in compulsory examinations, and strict enforcement of the Motor Traffic regulations or lectures on them, might do something towards lessening the increasingly heavy toll of the road during the past few months. The motor cycle had been developed into a particularly speedy machine and became a menace in the wrong hands, not only to its rider but to other vehicles on the road. This referred especially to machines carrying pillion riders and it was and always had been, his opinion that the carrying of pillion riders should be prohibited by amending the Motor Traffic Act. He did not desire the relatives of deceased to take it that he was referring to the particular sad fatality in which deceased was involved, but his comment was for the good of other motor cyclist.
