Food Relief Charges at Lismore. "I did this because I could not properly feed my family on the dole I got from Casino,'' said John Gannon Murphy (59) when charged at Lismore Police Court yesterday, before Mr. H. Hawkins, J.P., with obtaining a food order to the value of 6s 6d by false pretences and with intent to defraud. Murphy was fined £2, and ordered to pay 6s 6d compensation to the Chief' Secretary's Department. Constable A. M. W. Hunt said he had had complaints about defendant getting food relief at Casino, and travelling to Lismore and getting it there also. At Lismore on February 4, Murphy obtained a single man's order, but was a married man with four children. On a second charge, Murphy was fined £5, and ordered to pay 6s 6d compensation. Const. J. O'Connor said he saw the goods Murphy got with the order. These included tobacco, cigarette papers, matches, frankfurts and cooked meats, all of which were prohibited by the food relief scale.
James Keith Murphy (son of the previous defendant), on a similar charge, was discharged on entering into his own recognisance of £20 to be of good behaviour for 12 months and to come up for sentence within that time if called upon, and was ordered to pay 6s 7d compensation to the Chief Secretary's Department. Northern Star, Lismore, NSW, Saturday 27 February 1932.
