Local Woman Dies Following Auto Accident
Car Turns Over Near Maples Mill Early Yesterday Evening
Mrs. Katherine Collins, 41, of 342 North Avenue A, died in the Graham hospital at 8 o'clock last evening, two hours after she was injured in an automobile accident on route 78, south of Canton at the junction of Route 78 and the Maples Mill gravel road.
The accident occurred when the car driven by Mrs. Collins' husband, Clarence Collins, driving north on route 78, was reportedly struck by an automobile driven by Charles Brooks, route 6, Canton. Brooks, driving south, was apparently trying to turn onto the Maples Mill gravel road, when he cut in front of the oncoming Collins machine, striking the left front fender, and forcing it from the highway, where it plunged in the yard of the Donald Ray residence, turning over three times.
Mrs. Collins was first believed to be not seriously injured. However, she was taken to the Graham hospital, where she died two hours later. The couple was returning from Liverpool, where they had been visiting relatives. Their son, Jerry, was not with them at the time of the accident.
Collins suffered a lacerated forehead and left shoulder, and was not hospitalized.
The automobile was badly damaged.
She was born Nov. 18, 1908, in Cuba, a daughter of John and Elma Bundesen Stell. On April 23, 1932 she was married in Havana to Clarence Collins, who survives.
Other survivors are: one son, Jerry R., a student at Canton high school; two brothers: Clarence Stell, and Alvin Stell, both of route 1, Canton. She was preceded in death by one sister.
Mrs. Collins had lived all of her life in this vicinity, and was a member of the First Methodist church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Murphy Memorial home, with Dr. H. E. Sortor officiating.
Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the Murphy Memorial home.
Dr. Rod Maguire, Fulton county coroner, announced today that an inquest will be held, at a time to be announced later.
