Fatality at the Jetty.
("Townsville Star.")
A distressing accident occurred at the jetty this morning, as the result of which a wharf lumber named Niels Frederick Anderson, met his death.
The accident happened during the working of cargo from the Wyandra, which arrived from south this morn ing, and Anderson, with two others, Wnm. Selkirk and Daniel Monahan, was employed receiving on the lighter Myrtle, which was alongside. A start was made on the Wyandra's cargo at 6 o'clock, and continued without interruption until 7.10. At this particular moment a sling of cement, consisting of 17 bags. was being transhipped into the Myrtle, and when the crane moved it over the hold, the rope of the sling broke, dropping the 14cwt. load into the hold, a distance of twenty-eight feet.
The unfortunate man Anderson was unfortunately in a stooping position, removing a box from the previous sling load, and apparently did not no tice the incoming sling. He received the full weight of the cement and was killed instantly.
It would seem that the affair happened so suddenly that neither deceased's mate nor the hatchman could sound a warning in time. The crane was in charge of W. Carter.
The Ambulance was sent for and the police notified, and on arrival Sergeant Martin examined the body and found life to be extinct. Blood could be seen on the deceased's face, and a lacerated wound on the left hand was noticeable. The Ambulance men removed the body from the hold to the A.U.S.N. shed, whence it was removed to the morgue. All the lumbers ceased work, and formed into line, following the procession to the morgue.
An examination by Dr. Humphry disclosed that death, was due to a fractured skull, the brain protruding. The face bones were fractured, and all the ribs on the left side were broken.
The faitality cast a gloom over the jetty, and out cf respect the Water side Workers ceased work until 6 p.m.
Deceased was a married man, 59 years of age, a resident of Railway Estate, and leaves a wife and a large family to mourn their loss. .
A magisterial inquiry is to be held. The funeral takes place at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
