Obituary
MR. JAMES JOSEPH WOOD.
Yesterday morning death removed from our midst one of Grenfell's best known residents. We refer to Mr. J. J. Wood, who passed away as above stated in the Grenfell Hospital. Deceased was born at Brundah over 72 years ago, being a son of the late Mr. Joseph Wood (brother
of the late Mr. J. B. Wood). In the early days the late Mr. Wood was employed on Brundah Station, which in those days extended to Condobolin, and once he rode from the homestead to Condobolin on a horse without a saddle. Mr. Wood married Mrs. Watson (mother of Messrs. John and Fred. Watson and Mrs. Phillip Jamieson), and three sons survive-Messrs. James, William and Arthur; a daughter (Miss Babe Wood) died about 20 years ago. The deceased, in his later years,
spent a good deal of his time in mining, and for some years was on Goonigal and Tinpot fields. He also conducted the old Grenfell Hotel, and was later proprietor of the hotel at Bogolong, which lease was subsequently transferred to the Exchange Hotel by Mr. Toohey. The late Mr. Wood, in years gone by, took a keen interest in racing, and owned many well known horses, the best being Bunyip and Cloud. In election campaigns he made his presence felt as a campaigner, being a staunch Nationalist. He also was a veterinary surgeon, and persons with sick animals invariably sent for 'Poddy Wood.' Our late friend was a man who did not know fear, and on one occasion he dived into an underground tank at the old Albion Hotel and rescued a little girl (now Mrs. P. M. Tunney, who was reared from infancy by the late Mrs. Wood); the tank had no pump attached, and Mr. Wood had to keep afloat until help came. He and the child were hauled out by the late Mr. Thomas Peck. The late Mr. Wood at that time was about eighteen, stone weight. Up to three or four years ago deceased was a strong healthy man, but since then his health had not been of the best, although he had been interested in mining up to a few weeks ago. He was one of the hardy pioneers, who, since boyhood had been used to living out in all kinds of weather, and was well known in this and other districts, and perhaps the following lines may be appropriate:-'A careless man in his talk was Jim, And an awkward hand in a row. He never funked; and never lied, I reckon he never knowed how.' The funeral is timed to leave the hospital at 3.30 this afternoon.
