Then he has a very fine herd of cows, the butter being always in good demand at Gympie, and as a horse brccder he has some eighty or ninety horses on the ground, as well as two noted stallions, -.

19318 THYNNE, ANDREW JOSEPH (1847-1927), politician,
son of Edward Thynne, was born in County Clare, Ireland, on 30 October 1847. He was educated at the Christian Brothers' school, Ennistymon, by a private tutor, and at Queen's College, Galway, where he won a classical scholarship. He came to Brisbane with his parents in 1864, but the family soon after removed to Ipswich. Thynne entered the Queensland civil service, resigned later to take up the study of law, and was admitted as a solicitor in 1873. He prospered in his profession and in 1882 was appointed a member of the Queensland legislative council. He was minister for justice in the second McIlwraith <0-dict-biogMc.html> (q.v.) ministry from June to Novembcr 1888 and held the same position when the ministry was reconstructed under Morehead <0-dict-biogMa-Mo.html> (q.v.) until August 1890. He was honorary minister in the McIlwraith-Nelson <0-dict-biogN-O.html> (q.v.) ministry from May to October 1893, and minister for justice in the succeeding Nelson ministry from October 1893 to October 1894, then postmaster-general until March 1897, and from March 1896 to March 1898 minister for agriculture. He took a particular interest in agriculture, and was largely responsible for the founding of the agricultural college at Gatton and for the state experimental farms. During this busy period of Thynne's life he also represented Queensland at the 1891 federal convention, at the colonial conference held in Canada in 1894, at the postal conference at Hobart in 1895, and at the Pacific Cable conference in 1895-6. He was associated with the foundation of the university of Queensland, became a member of the first senate in 1910, vice-chancellor in 1916, and chancellor in 1926. During the 1914-18 war he worked with immense energy as chairman of the recruiting committee, resigning this post to carry on a campaign for conscription. He had joined the Queensland volunteer defence force when a young man in 1867 and had attained the rank of Lieutenant-colonel. He was a first-rate rifle-shot, having twice won the Queen's prize, and more than once captained the Queensland rifle team. His other interests may be suggested by the fact that at various times he was president of the Queensland ambulance brigade, the boy scouts association, the chamber of agriculture, the law association, and was chairman of the board of technical education. He retained his seat in the legislative council until his death on 27 February 1927. He was married twice, (1) to Mary, daughter of William Cairncross, and (2) to Mrs L. G. Corrie, who survived him with three sons and four daughters of the first marriage.
Thynne, who had a lovable personality, was a well-educated man, a persuasive speaker, a sound lawyer and a good soldier. As a politician he did excellent work for the dairying industry in Queensland, endeavoured to reform the legislative council from within, and when the first effort was made to abolish it fought in defence of it with great ability. He was strongly patriotic, and never spared himself during a long life devoted to working for his adopted country, for which he had much affection.

The funeral of Mrs A. Macpherson, the young wife of the popular manager of the Pareora station, took place yesterday. The deceased had been married less than 12 months, and was a daughter of Mrs BROWN, formerly of St Andrew's and now the Grosvenor Hotel, Timaru. General sympathy is expressed for Mr Macpherson, whose name for kindness is a household word in South Canterbury.

Timaru Herald, 11 July 1887, Page 2
The funeral of the late Mrs Macpherson took place yesterday afternoon, and was attended by a very large number of people. Among the chief mourners were Mr Alex. Macpherson (late husband of the deceased young lady), Messrs Brown, Gray, and John Macpherson, and we noticed amongst the other mourners members from all parts of the country districts in South Canterbury and North Otago. The service at the mortuary chapel and the grave was conducted by the Rev. L. C. Brady, and was listened to with the greatest attention. The bereaved relatives are most deeply sympathised with by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

Funeral of Captain Bascand. The funeral of the late Captain C. S. Bascand, Harbor Master at Timaru, took place yesterday afternoon, and was attended by a very large number of people. The cortege left his late residence, Main North Road, shortly after 2.30 o'clock, the Lifeboat Crew, under Chief coxswain W. Collis, acting as coffin and pallbearers, the coffin being wrapped in the Union Jack. After two closed carriages, containing the members of his family, came the Timaru Volunteer Rocket Brigade in full force, under First-Lieutenant Jackson. The Timaru Volunteer Fire Brigade also followed in plain clothes. As the cortege moved off a round of seven guns was fired from the Rocket Brigade Station, the round being repeated over his grave. The lifeboat crew acted as coffin-bearers at the cemetery, conveying their late captain's remains from the hearse to the chapel and from thence to the grave. The burial service was performed by the Rev. Mr Beck, Wesleyan minister, in a most solemn and impressive manner.
A slight but painful accident happened Mr C. Hallum, a member of the Timaru Rocket Brigade, and who was one of the filing party at the late Captain Bascand's funeral yesterday afternoon. Mr Hallam was in the act, with others, of lifting the gun into an express previous to returning home, when by some means it slipped and fell, crushing the top of one of his fingers on the left hand so severely that the doctor deemed it necessary to amputate it at the first joint.

Hawera & Normanby Star, 14 July 1883, Page 2
At the Harbor Board meeting to-day the following resolutions were passed : That the board convey to the family of the late harbormaster, Captain Bascand, its feeling of sympathy with them at his sudden and unexpected death, and pass for payment, and forward to the family the sum of £50.

DEATH OF CAPTAIN C.S. BASCAND.
In yesterday's issue we mentioned that Captain Bascand, the Harbor
Master at this port, had been taken seriously ill in the train whilst
on the way home from Dunedin to Timaru. It is with sincere regret that
we have now to chronicle his death, which occurred about nine o'clock
on Thursday evening, the cause being strangulation of the bowels. His
eldest son, Mr Andrew Bascand, who left Timaru by the Express on
Thursday, arrived at Waitati about seven o'clock, and was present when
his father died. Captain Charles Stephen Bascand was 62 years [sic,
he was 52] of age. He was, we understand, a native of one of the
Channel Islands. He took to the sea at an early age, and followed that
profession during the greater part of his life. He was one of the best
known masters in the coastal trade on the West Coast of this and the
North Island, prior to his being appointed Harbour Master at Timaru on
the death of Captain Mills. After settling in Timaru he made many warm
friends. It was only a week age that he was married for the second
time and the flags at the lighthouse and on the vessels in port were
flying it honor of the event ; ? yesterday they were hanging half-mast
high for his death. Great sympathy is felt by all sections of the
community for his young wife, and for his family several of whom are,
comparatively speaking of tender age. Our God, to call us homeward.
Deceased was only married yesterday week, and leaves a large family by
a former marriage. He was a highly respected officer.
