    • Funeral: 16 Apr 2013, Fraser Coast Chronicle; Hundreds say farewell to one of the Coast's true gentlemen PHOTOGRAPHY, poetry, nature, horses-Wilson Thomsen was a man of many passions. But most of all he was a man who loved his community and adored his family, and that was evident on Monday as hundreds of family and friends gathered at Maryborough's St Stephen's Church to say their final farewells. Born on September 1, 1937 to Brooweena cattle farmers Noble and Jessie Thomsen, Wilson was a brother to Clyde, Ivan, Nora and Hazel. His interest in photography began at a young age and his first darkroom was set up in his bedroom at Brooweena. At age 25 he met Narelle, the woman who would soon become his wife, the love of his life, and go on to be the mother of their two daughters Karleila and Kimberley. All the while his passion and flair for photography grew and he was doing more and more photography jobs for people, eventually resulting in Wilson and Narelle leaving the land to establish Thomsen's Photographic Gallery in Maryborough. He was incredibly proud when, after his retirement, Kimberly continued the business under the same name. Wilson was an active member of the Lions Club of Maryborough and a regular at working bees, sausage sizzles and the Driver Revivers. After decades of service he had well and truly earned his life membership. He was among those who fought the government- and won-from building the Traveston Dam on the Mary River. He loved his poetry and learning new writing skills. But above all he was a devoted family man-he loved and protected his "three girls"-Narelle, Karleila and Kimberly- and doted on his three grandchildren Eldon, Matilda and Lincoln. He was a cherished son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law and uncle and, of course, a friend. Wilson died peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family, last Wednesday. • Personal: 13 Jan 1937, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; CROCODILES IN MARY RIVER Correspondent's Experiences S. C. Thomsen. "Travellers' Rest.", Brooweena, writes: Having read in the "Chronicle" the report of a crocodile being at Tiaro recently. I thought it might interest readers if I gave my experiences. About the year 1881, I, in company with my brother, was on the river bank about half a mile above where Gootchie Creek joins the Mary. There was a big deep stretch of water there, which in later years was called "between Mr. Johnston's and Mr. Easey's crossings." Whilst standing there I saw a crocodile or an alligator-I don't know which-rise to the top of the water and swim a little way, and then dive again. As far as I can remember, it was about 12 feet long. There is no mistake, the animal was there. I am positive. I left that part shortly after and returned to live there about the year 1893. I was very fond of line fishing and I used to go out in a boat at night to my favourite places. One place I liked very much. It was a steep bank into the river, with overhanging trees close to the water. I favoured that spot because I could tie up both ends of the boat to keep it from drifting out. It was my practice to fish with my line straight down. The depth was about 24 feet. On one particular night I was fishing there. It was very dark and I heard things round the boat that I could not understand, and once I distinctly heard scraping on the boat, which I thought was a turtle. Later I became aware that the boat was leaning over and I could not account for it. But while I was thinking about it the boat suddenly righted itself and I must admit that I had what they call the "wind up." I sat a little longer till between me and the bank I heard a sound like a horse blowing his nose loudly. I could stand no more, so 1 jumped up, undid the boat and with as much noise as possible, rowed away. I went down next day to investigate and I found plain tracks on the mud bank of an alligator or crocodile. It was not much use talking about it in those days, for people wouldn't believe you. It was the same with the sharks at that time until my brother and I found one dead at Easey's crossing. Our boat was nine feet long and the shark was about 18 inches longer than the boat. That convinced them about the sharks. It is my opinion, crocodiles have been there for years and I believe that there are a good few of them about." • Obituary: 29 Jun 1943, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; DEATH OF DISTRICT PIONEER BROOWEENA, June 26 The death of Mr. Sophus Christian Thomsen, of Traveller's Rest, Brooweena, which occurred in the Biggenden Hospital, has removed one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of the district. Born at Sonderburg, Denmark, on May 29, 1865, the late Mr Thomsen emigrated to Australia with his parents in 1874, in the ship Hershel, landing in Maryborough when that city was only a small town. His father obtained employment with Mr. B. Martins, of Scrub Hill, Pialba, but after a short time decided to select land of his own, and secured property at Deborah, on the Mary River, where he resided for many years. RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION When a lad in his early teens, the late Mr. Thomsen assisted his brother Andrew as offsider driving a horse team and after a while secured a team of his own. He hauled railway material on the construction of the Maryborough-Gympie line, and also on the Kilkivan line construction, working through the construction of the Dickabram bridge over the Mary River at Miva. Incidentally it may be mentioned that it was while working on the construction of the Dickabram bridge, the late Mr. Charles Hendricksen- popularly known as "Lame Charie," was seriouslv injured through falling from the scaffolding. Mr. Hendricksen kept a fruit stall in Adelaide-street, Maryborough, when he recovered from this accident, and got about in a specially constructed bicycle which he "pedalled" by hand. The two men were great friends. THE LAND In 1884 the late Mr. Thomsen married Miss Alice Hutchinson, daughter of Mr. Hugh Hutchinson of Tiaro. He then worked at casual labour in different parts of the district, and for some years was employed by the Tiaro Shire Council. When the first section Of the Gayndah line-Mungar to Brooweena, was being built he was farming at Pine Huts, Aramara and supplied the construction workers with vegetables. In 1903 he brought his wife and young family from Tiaro to "Flaunden," Boompa, the property of the late Mr. Thomas Yerby where he dairied for a time and later share-dairied with the late Mr. J. J. Hay at "Haysmere," Brooweena. Nearly forty years ago he selected land on Teebar Creek, naming his property "Traveller's Rest," where he resided to the end. SERVICE AS COUNCILLOR Mr. Thomsen served the ratepayers as a councillor of the Woocoo Shire for a period of six years, and his practical knowledge of road work made him a valuable member. Always a keen member of church work, his home was open at all times to preachers of the gospel, irrespective of creed. In later years he was an ardent worker for the Methodist Church, and was instrumental in forming the Brooweena Christian Endeavour Society. He acted as delegate of this society at conferences and conventions in various centres. His remains were interred in St. Mary's Cemetery, Brooweena, after a service in the Methodist Church, Biggenden, conducted by Mr. Jones, an old friend of the deceased, and a service in the Methodist Church, Brooweena, conducted the Rev. B. Seymour, who also officiated at the graveside. A very large gathering of relatives and friends attended these services. His wife predeceased him by eleven years, as did also his brother Andrew, and two sisters, Mrs. Pedersen (Nikenbah) and Mrs. Hoffman (Tiaro). Ono brother, Peter, aged 81, resides in North Queensland. He is survived by five sons and six daughters, viz.. Albert, (Australian Garrison Forces, N.Q.), Peter, (A.I.F., New Guinea), Messrs Sophus and Edward (Brooweena), Mesdames J. J. Bargenquust (Boompa), S. Sorenson (Brisbane), E. Vanderwolf (Nikenbah), W. Douglas (Yerra), A. Wilson (Wynum), and A. Russell, Toowoomba). One daughter. Ruby, died in infancy. There are 42 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. One grand-daughter. Miss Myrtle Sorrensen, aged 19, was accidentally killed from a bolting horse at Dobbin, in 1932 and was buried at Cloncurry. Besides his two sons, Albert and Peter, seven grandsons are serving in the Army. One in the R.A.A.F., served through the Middle East. One in the A.l.F. served in the Middle East and Greece. One in the A.l.F. was severely wounded in New Guinea, and was invalided home, but is now on duty. One in the Navy, and three at various battle stations in Australia. • Obituary: 28 Jul 1932, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; BROOWEENA. July 26 Obituary. There passed away at her residence "Travellers Rest," Brooweena, on Saturday, 16 inst., an old and highly respected resident of the district, in the person of Mrs. Alice Thomsen, at the age of 66 years. The deceased who was the daughter of the late Mr. Hugh Hutchinson, of Tiaro, was beloved and respected by a very wide circle of friends to whom the news of her death came as a severe shock. During her 32 years residence in this district she had intimately associated herself with every movement for its advancement and welfare. All her life she had been a devoted member of the Methodist church and in her later she was an enthusiastic member of the Women's branch of the C.W.A. Of a most generous and kindly disposition, she was at all times willing and eager to lend her assistance, to any good cause, and the community is poorer by her dimise. Besides a sorrowing husband, Mr. Sophus Thomsen, who has been a valued member of the Woocoo Shire Council for several years. The deceased leaves a family of five sons and six daughters, namely Messrs Albert and Peter (North Queensland), Noble, Sophus and Edward (Brooweena), Mesdames J.J. Bargenquast (Boompa), G. Davies (Babinda), E. Vanderwolf (Deborah), A. Wilson (Hivesville), and W. Dale (Gomerri). One daughter died in childhood. There are thirty grandchildren and one Great Grandchild. Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland, Thursday, 28 July 1932

    Notes:

Alice's story is difficult, There is no birth certificate, as in 1860's aboriginal children were not registered, often Marriage and Death certificates were not issued either. Alice met her future husband after a horse riding accident where Sophus Thomsen was thrown from his mount and was being dragged by the stirrups, She was with a group of Aboriginal people who nursed him back to health, They did not marry straight away, they had Mary, Albert, and Peter before they married officially. There are many family stories about alice so what is true and what is a great yarn is yet to be decided.

    Birth:
Alice is believed to belong to the Badtjala Tribe, their region being the Wide Bay-Burnett area including Fraser Island.

The Badtjala people have lived on the world's largest sand island, Thoorgine (Fraser Island), since time immemorial. By the early part of the twentieth century, however, most of the Badtjala population had been massacred by white settlers and the survivors removed to Christian missions on the island or the mainland.

    Butchulla Tribe
The Butchulla people are the Traditional Owners of K'gari (Fraser Island).
For more than 5000 years, perhaps as many as 50,000 years, Butchulla people lived in harmony with the seasons and the land and sea, maintaining a balance between spiritual, social and family connections.

Today the Butchulla people continue to walk the cultural pathway of their ancestors, whom they believe have lived on this country since the beginning of the Dreaming.

Because the Butchulla language did not come from a written culture, this nation has been referred to variously as: Butchulla, Badjala, Badjula, Badjela, Bajellah, Badtjala and Budjilla.

    • Obituary: 17 Oct 1914, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; THE LATE MR ANDREAS THOMSEN The death of Mr Andreas Thomsen, which occurred at Tiaro on 22nd September last has removed an old and highly esteemed resident of the district. He was born in Denmark on 1st December 1823. His father died a couple of years later, and the lad's early education was of the most meagre kind. As he grew older he showed a keen desire to improve his knowledge, and all his spare moments were spent in study. At an early age he joined the military, and after spending some years in the strenuous life of a soldier, he undertook such contracts as fort building and other Government works. He was twice married; his first wife, by whom there was issue three sons and two daughters, predeceased him 49 years ago. His second wife survives him. In 1871 he sent his daughters and his eldest son to Australia, and three years later, he, with his wife and two other sons, followed. Landing in Maryborough, he spent twelve months in the vicinity of Pialba. He then settled on the Mary River, near Gundiah, where he undertook general farming, dairying, etc. In 1883 he moved to Tiaro, where he has resided ever since, being engaged in agricultural pursuits. About two years ago he met with a painful accident, sustaining a fracture of the leg, from which he never fully recovered. By his death, the district loses an honest, hardworking resident; and his family a devoted husband and father. Besides his wife, who resides in Tiaro, he leaves two daughters, Mrs Mikklesen (Maryborough), and Mrs Hoffman (Theebine), and three sons, Andrew (Deborah), Peter (North Queensland), and Sophus (Brooweena), besides thirty-one grandchildren and forty-five great-grandchildren. My Beloved Husband
    ANDREAS THOMSEN
    Died September 22, 1914, Aged 90 Years

One of the best the Lord could send
Beloved by all - a faithful friend -
Called home from those who deeply love,
To gain a glorious life above.
With aching hearts, with tearful eyes,
We linger where our dear one lies,
And breathe those sacred words once more,
Not lost but only gone before.
