Robert GARRAD was sentenced to 14 years. He was convicted of armed robbery with John Mayes his father-in-law and George Mayes his brother-in-law. On February 1808, the group stole from the house of William Morgan in Thornam Magna "One hundred and sixty pounds weight of pork at the value of four pounds, two legs of pork to the value of eight shillings and two earthen dishes to the value of twelve pence". They were sentenced to death. (PRO HO 11/2 - Assizes 35/248). The sentence of Robert was later commuted to 14 years transportation. In 1811 he was assigned to John Campbell at Bringelly. By 1814 Robert was still on rations and was indentured to JT Campbell Esq. In 1816 Ticket of Leave was given and in 1818 a Conditional Pardon was granted on 31st January. CP no. 874.
Robert then went to work for Thomas Wilford. In 1824 his Certificate of Freedom was granted. CF no 086/1783. By 1828 Robert was working for WC Wentworth as an Overseer Assistant at Camden. From 1832-1835 Robert was a Convict Overseer for Sydney Stephen at Murramarang, with 1834 being the first year he is listed as being on his own property "Wickham Hill", Narrawallee. He received the official notice of the land grant of "Wickham Hill in 1853. This grant was for 300 acres costing 75 pounds. He married Sarah Taylor in 1826 and they had the following children:
