    Other Events:

    • Personal: 1922, Bethel Chapel, Celyon; HISTORY OF BETHEL CHAPEL The gospel message for the end-time, the message of the three angels of Revelation 14 was first proclaimed in Ceylon around 1904 but it was not till the seventh day of the seventh month in the year 1922 that the first Seventh-day Adventist church in Ceylon was organized in Colombo with seven charter members: Mr E D Wijesinghe, Mr D E Wijesinghe, Mrs Croos, Mrs Juanita Jessen, Mrs Patricia Lobo, Miss Amy Passe, Miss Dora Passe who were baptized in the Wellawatte Canal by Pastor J. M. Comer. He was assisted by Pastor Hansen. When the church was first organized believers met at ?Glenfield?, the residence of Pastor Hansen, and also at the Dutch Burgher Union Hall, until the former Bethel Chapel was erected on lease-hold land at No: 7 Alfred House Gardens, Colombo in 1930. This was made possible by the untiring efforts of Pastor G. F. Enoch, who shepherded the new church. Pastor H. Christensen took over the mantle from Pastor Enoch and held evangelistic meetings throughout the year, at which time the church was filled to capacity and people listened from outside the windows, thrilled with his oratory. He was assisted by Pastor Dickinson. Pastor Christensen was succeeded by Pastor Peak, Pastor A. F. Jessen and Pastor Dunbar Smith. Pastor Smith conducted a large evangelistic campaign in Colombo Town Hall. During this time the church membership was strengthened; however, Pastor Smith had to leave abruptly when Japan entered the scene of World War II. During the difficult days of World War II when only a small group met faithfully each Sabbath; it was the late Mrs. Patricia Lobo who led out in the Sabbath School and read passages from the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy during church service and virtually single-handedly kept the Church?s activities ongoing. Pastor Jessen continued as Church Pastor for a time, till he was transferred to India in 1945. Pastor Wilbur Dunn became the Superintendent, church Pastor and Voice of Prophecy Director in 1945. It was at this time that the property on which Bethel Chapel now stands was purchased outright together with the adjoining property which is now occupied by the Sri Lanka Mission of Seventh-day Adventists. This was the leading of God, working through Pastors Eugene A. Crane and R. S. Fernando. (Bethel Chapel Seventh-Day Adventist Church)

    • Personal: 1 May 1958, Southern Asia Tidings, POONA, INDIA; THE LAST SABBATH AT LOWRY MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL JUANITA JESSEN THE 29th of March was a day of special importance at Lowry Memorial High School. It was the last Sabbath of the school year. It was also the 13th Sabbath, and we had the satisfaction of having reached all our goals. Our Investment plants were loaded with yellow and white chrysanthemums, for each flower represented 8 annas and we had received Rs. 110/- for the quarter. After a short and inspiring sermon, five candidates, who had been preparing for baptism, were voted into the church, subject to baptism. Then followed a solemn Communion service after which Pastor V. T. Thomas baptized the five candidates. We are happy indeed that Lowry Memorial High School is a haven of safety where our young people can live in close fellowship with the Master Guide while receiving an education that will fit them for eternity. Let us ever keep our schools aloof from the world, and in full harmony with God's plan for His children. (Southern Asia Tidings, POONA, INDIA, MAY 1, 1958)
