Birth:
Linton is a town in Victoria, Australia, off Glenelg Highway. Most of the town is located in Golden Plains Shire; however, a small section is in the Shire of Pyrenees
History
Linton was first settled about 1840 and was named after a pioneer family in an area.
Gold was found in 1848 in what later became known as Linton's Diggings. Chinese people, among others, mined the local shafts until the gold ran out. The miners remained in the area and set up market gardens. The Post Office opened on 5 November 1857 as Linton's and was renamed Linton around 1860.[2] Much mining equipment can still be found in the Linton district.

Christening date; 05 Nov. 1815. His father was William Hold and his mother Anne, maiden name unknown at present. It is likely the William Hold listed in the 1841 Census, aged 74 and born abt. 1787 in Wymington.Bedfordshire, Eng. is the father of William (B.1815) He is listed in the Civil Parish of Little Harrowden in the census, a Lodger with the Larum Family. He was a Widower and he was an Agri. Labourer. This William Hold died in December 1866, aged 79.His death is registered in Wellingborough
William Hold married Anne Croxen, daughter of Benjamin Croxen and Anne,on Feb 25. 1848. They were married in Little Harrowden, in the Parish Church. William was a Widower, Full Age. His occupation a Labourer. Anne was a Miner (Under Age). She was a Lacemaker. Both were born in Little Harrowden.

William and Ann had a child born on the voyage also. The Records of the Osceola state it was a daughter. Later records in Victoria show it was a boy named Thomas and born very close to the date of Hannah`s (Mary Ann) death.
William , Ann , John and Hannah boarded the Osecola, a 769 ton, sailing ship in London, bound for South Australia. The Osceola saild from Plymouth, 26 Dec 1850 and arrived at Port Adeliade on 05 Apr 1851. Their daughter Hannah died at sea on 22 Mar 1851, and a son, Thomas was born on the voyage. His birth would have been close to Hannah`s (also called Mary Ann) death.
Nothing is known of their time spent in South Australia. They left for the Goldfields of Victoria, shortly after the birth of their daughter, Mary Ann. She was born in the Adeliade District on 12 Aug 1853.
William was a Gold Digger, and later called a miner. They moved around Victoria, following the Gold Rushes. These are the known places where William and Ann and their family lived in Victoria, until Ann`s death on 02 Jul 1864.

These places were very rich gold mining areas. William was still a Miner when his wife Ann died on 2 Jul 1864.
He then spent more time on the gold fields around Ballarat and Wedderburn before coming to Jallukar. He was engaged in bullock driving around the gold fields when he first came to Pomonal and selected land in 1874 - 1875.

Nothing at all is known of John, after the families arrival in South Australia. He appears to be alive when William died in 1895, as he is listed on the death certificate and his age given.
William and his sons became Orchardists. They suffered tremendous hardships. The land was poor, there were droughts and dreadful Bushfires, also Rabbits eating the small fruit trees. William Hold is listed as a Rate Payer in the Parish of Jalluker in 1880. His Property was valued at Two Pounds and Ten Shillings. The selectors struggled to make a living.Much of the land was to sandy for cultivation

ARARAT, Friday.-Many years have elapsed since, the late Mr. W. Hold camped his bullocks at the place which is now known as Fernside, the fine orchard property of Mr. AV. It. Archibald, and soon after started to plant fruit crops. This was practically, the first step taken in the development of the fruit-growing industry on what was then regarded as waste land, scrub covered and sandy.

Pomonal enjoyed this year one of the most productive seasons in its history. Ochardists and their assistants are busily engaged gathering, grading, and packing 80,000 cases of apples for export. The work was commenced over a month ago and will continue for another six weeks at least.
The apples are of splendid size and Mr. Prosser, the Agricultural department's expert, considers the quality of the fruit to be excellent. Many of the trees are so heavily laden that they will give four or five pickings, and some trees from which the largest fruit has already been gathered two or three times are still carrying average crops. The orchards lies on the eastern slopes of the Mom Cassel range of the Grampians, between Hall's Gap and Long Gully, and what was formerly waste scrub land is now one of the most noted fruit growing centres in the State.
Major Mitchell, the explorer, passed through the district in 1837, and the tree that he marked close to Pomonal withstood, the ravages of bush fires until a year or two ago.
In the sixties William Hold, Tom May, Peter de May, J. Smith, T. Copely, and J. -McGee, most of whom were carting timber from the mountains for fencing purposes, camped with their bollock teams at a spring near this tree, and Tom May planted the first fruit trees. The brothers Diggory and Torn Morcorn, the late H. H.Wettenhall, late Dr. Syme, and Mr. G. Barnes were early followers of his example, and for many years past the fruitgrowing industry at Pomonal has been quietly but steadily growing.
Now a group of soldier settlers are assisting in the development of the locality and tobacco growing is being combined with orchard work. Orchardists are sending away over £300 worth of apples each week, and a fair amount of this produce comes through Ararat. To give better transport facilities the Ararat Shire Council spent a good deal of money last year in improving the Ararat to Pomonal road, and constructed a bridge (which was opened by Lord Somers) over the Little Wimmera at the sheep wash. Though apple culture is at present the chief activity at Pomonal, other fruits, as pears, stone fruits, lemons, persimmons, grapes, and passion fruit and chestnuts, are also grown with much success.

Their children listed are, Ann 13, Arthur 2, Benjamin 2, Hannah 8, John 21, Mary 15, and William aged 19. Mary and Ann were Lace Makers and William and John Labourers. William and Benjamin migrated to Illinois, U S A. and became farmers. They have alarge Family Tree. They can be traced in the 1880 U S A Census.
In the 1861 English Census, Benjamin Croxen`s age was 73and Ann`s 68. They died between this Census and the 1871 Census as they are not listed.
William Hold and Anne Croxen were married in Little Harrowden, on Feb. 25th. 1848, in the Parish Church, according to the rites of the established Church Of England. William is full age and a Widower. His occupation. Labourer and his father William Hold. Anne is underage a Lace Maker and her father Benjamin Croxen. They both signed with their mark.
William`s first marriage has not been found with certianty yet, except his wife was Anne. William had one son from this marriage called John born in Little Harrowden and christened on 11 Nov. 1843. His parents William and Anne Hold.
Possibly another son called George was born and Christened in Little Harrowden on Nov.8 th. 1840. A George Hold died here in 1848. His first wife could have been one of the Ann Hold`s whose deaths are mentioned above.
William Hold and Ann Croxen`s first child was born in Little Harrowden in March 1849. Her birth name was Hannah nd she was christened Anna on the 3rd. of June 1849. She is later called Mary Ann.
William and Ann migrated to South Australia on the Osceola, a sailing ship of 769 tons. The Osceola sailed from Plymouth, England, on the 26th. Dec. 1850 and arrived at Port Adeliade on the 5th. of April 1851. It would have been a difficult and sad voyage for them. Ann was about 6 months pregnant. Their ages are Wiliam, 35, Ann 21, John 7, and Hannah 2.
Hannah also called Mary Ann on the shipping lists, died on the voyage on the 22nd.of March 1851. The records of the Osceola state that a daughter was born to Ann Hold during the voyage. Later records show it was a boy, who was named Thomas. Thomas was born very close to the date of Mary Ann`s death.
No details are known of the time William and Ann spent in South Australia. They were assisted Immigrants.
A daughter was born in South Australia on the 12th. Aug 1853. She was named Mary Ann. Nothing more is known until 1854. On the 21st. of Sep in that year, their son Thomas died at Avoca in Victoria. His death certificate states he was born At Sea, his age was 3 years and 6 months. He was called a Gold Diggers Child. The cause of his death was from the effects of a cold the length of which was four months. His father, William was a Gold Digger and his mother was called Hannah. William signed with his mark. Thomas was buried in the Avoca cemetery on the 30th. Sep 1854.
Wiliam and Ann probably left South Australia soon after Mary Ann`s birth to join the rush for gold in Victoria. It is not known as yet wether they came overland or by ship.
In the same year of Thomas` death, Mary Ann Hold died also. She died on the 19th. Dec 1854. She died of Dysentry, which lasted two weeks. Like Thomas she is called Gold Diggers Child. Willim Hold, Gold Digger signed with his mark. Mary Ann`s mother was listed as Anne. Mary Ann was buried at Avoca the same day. Her age is given s One year and Four months.
William Hold was born to William and Ann, according to his buriel record in 1856 at Linton near Ballarat. His birth was not regestered.
Next to be born was Arthur on the 28th. of July 1857 at Green Hills , near Avoca and Ballarat. William was now called a Miner instead of Gold digger
The next date William and Ann have been found is 1859. Another sad event occurred. Sarah Hold died on the 19th. Dec.1859, aged eight months. The cause of her death was Teething and Convulsions, the duration of which was three weeks. Baby Sarah died at Lamplough, and was buried at Avoca Cemetery on the 21st. Dec. William`s occupation was miner. Sarah birth was unregestered. Her death Certificate states she was born atBack Creek, near Amherst . This was near Avoca. There was a very large Gold rush from Back Creek to Lamplough on the weekend of the 26th- 27th of Nov. 1959
On the 31st. Dec 1861 a baby girl was born to William and Ann at Inglewood, another Gold rush town. Sadly she only lived for five minutes. There is lot of information on her birth certificate. It states William and Ann were both born at Little Harrowden, Northamptonshire, England. There were two living children, which would be William and Arthur. Six children were dead. Five of these would be Hannah also called Mary Ann, Thomas, Mary Ann, Sarah and this baby who was unnamed. This leaves one more.
There is no record of John, from Williams first marriage having died. From Williams (Senior) death certificate it seems he was still alive on the 15th Sep 1895 as he is listed as living but age unknown.
When this little unnamed daughter was born and died William is still a Miner. She was buried on the day of her birth in Old Inglewood Cemetery.
The next event known is Ann`s death, which was on the 2nd July 1864 at Inglewood. She died of Inflamation of the Womb after confinement which lasted 43 hours. This little baby must have been born dead. Ann`s maiden name was spelt Scrockson instead of Croxen, which is the correct spelling. . She was buried on the 3rd. July in Old Inglewood Cemetery.
A sad end to a sad life. While in Victoria, Ann would have never had a settled life and never a house to live in. As they followed the gold rushes from one place to another they most likely would have lived in a tent.
Children had to be tough to survive the living conditions on the Gold Fields.
In all probability Ann and William would not have heard from their families back in Northamptonshire, as neither of them could write.
William Hold died on the 15 Sep 1895 at Julluker near Stawell, where he was a Farmer. He could not have found very much gold as records show him and his Sons Arthur And William as not being able to pay their land taxes. William died of Chronic Rheumatism and Chronic Bronchitis. He was buried in the Stawell cemetery on the 17th September. He was 84 years old.
His first marriage is mentioned , but it is unknown to whom he was married. As stated above John appears to still be live but his age unknown .
William's death certificate also shows John was from the first marriage. So far no record for John can be found in Victoria or any other State of Australia. He could have returned to England.
The records of Stawell Cemetery show William was buried in the same grave as his son William (28.1.1921),Selina Bolton, William`s wife (26.3.1899), their sons, William Edward (22.11.1939)and John (15.4.1963).
