THE LATE MRS. ELIZABETH
BLEAKLEY.
By the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Bleak-
ley on June 25, at her late residence,
Lade-street, Gaythorne, another of the
pioneers who helped to build Australia,
and extend the British Empire, has
vanished. Mrs. Bleakley was the eldest
daughter of the late George Montgomery,
of County Cavan, Ireland, and came to
Australia with her husband and child in
the year 1860, and went at once to the
bush. Her husband, Mr. Andrew Bleak-
ley, who passed away 28 years ago, was
a scholar and historian who took a
keen interest in the politics and other
questions of the time. In the early
days of their pioneer life far from any
school, Mr. Bleakley gave his evenings,
after a heavy day's work, to teaching his
children, and children of neighbours, and
on Sundays held a Sunday School and
Bible class, and Church services open to
all who could attend. These intrepid
pioneers went first to Waraba (off the
North Coast Line), and after returning to
Brisbane for a short time finally settled
at Upper Caboolture in 1877. Quite a
host of people remember how welcome
visitors were at Brookvale, where open
house was kept, and merry parties of
young people gathered. The old home
is now the residence of Mr. Basil Bleak-
ley. When land was first thrown open
to selection in this district, many
Bavarian Missionaries were among the first
settlers. This, of course, was long be-
fore the day of railways, the travelling
being by pack horse, or wagon, and
communication with Brisbane took the
settlers three days going and three days,
returning with their household stores
and goods. There was also communica-
tion by sea, which entailed long drives
on rough roads. The late Mrs. Bleakley,
who was in her 89th year, is survived by
six daughters and six sons. The daugh-
ters are: Mrs. M. J. Franz, Hendra (widow
of Mr. W. Franz, who was also a pioneer
of Stony Creek), Mrs. A. R. Findlay
(Enoggera); Mrs. J. P. Davies (West
End); Misses Adela, Mary, and Olivia
Bleakley. The sons are Messrs. William,
Andrew, Arthur, John, Basil, and Cle-
ment Bleakley, five of whom are married
and with one exception are all engaged
in dairying or grazing pursuits. Mrs.
Bleakley had a brother who served in
the Crimean war, also five grandsons in
the Great War, four of whom paid the
supreme sacrifice. Her sister, widow of
the late T. P. Pugh, Police Magistrate,
resides at the home of her son-in-law, Rev.
S. W. Bath, Ipswich, and her other sister,
the late Mrs. G. P. Merry, of Toowoomba,
predeceased her some years ago. There
was a large attendance of friends and
relatives to pay their last tribute at the
funeral of Mrs. Bleakley, and many beau-
tiful floral tributes were received.
