    • Obituary: 31 Jul 1935, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; Obituary MR R. C. STEPHENSEN As one who had seen this district progress over the past 51 years and helped in that progress, the passing of a much respected old resident of Nikenbah, in the person of Mr Rosa Conrad Stephensen, will be regretted by a very wide circle of friends. Coming from Danish stock he was a great believer in the saying "A Man is only as old as he feels" and in spite of his near 83 years, he was a very active man and took delight in proving his youthful complex by standing on his head at each of his birthdays up to last year. He was to have celebrated his 83rd birthday in August next. He carried on his trade of blacksmith at Chapel Road, Nikenbah, up to the time of his death and passed away in his sleep some time on Monday night. The late Mr Stephensen wasborn in Denmark on August 15, 1852. At the age of 14 he started to learn the trade of black-smithing and after four years' apprenticeship opened a blacksmith shop himself, which he continued until he left for Australia in 1883. He landed at Maryborough on January 19, 1884, bringing with him his wife and family. He settled at Tinana, where he worked with the late Mr J. C. Stephensen (a brother), P. Hansen and Co., blacksmiths and wheelwrights at Gympie Road, Tinana. After two or three years there he went to Pialba and started a blacksmith shop near the old site of the Pialba School. At that time the farmers were all new settlers, and the road to Maryborough was only a bush track traversed by wagon and sulky. Blacks were numerous and times were hard to all pioneers of a new country. After many years he shifted to Scrub Hill, Nikenbah, where he carried on black-smithing and farming. Feeling that he would like to revisit the land of his birth, he made a trip to Denmark in 1912. In 1918 he lost his wife after 45 years of married life. Some time later he shifted into Nikenbah proper and established a blacksmith shop at Chapel Road. He married twice afterwards, but both his wives predeceased him. The late Mr Stephensen is survived by a family of three daughters and one son, of his first wife. The daughters are Mesdames L. List (Pialba), D. Readdy (Maryborough), and J. Blake (Maryborough), and the son Mr Conrad Stephensen (Nikenbah). One daughter, Mrs R. Blackley predeceased him about ten years ago. His descendants include 23 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland, Wednesday 31 July 1935
    • In Memorium: 29 Jul 1936, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; STEPHENSEN.-In loving memory of our dear father and grandfather, Rosa Conrad, who departed thin life on July 29, 1935. A better father never lived, Nor one so true and kind; His equal in this weary world We very seldom find. His heart was always in his home, He toiled and did his beat, Until there came the sudden end, God called him borne to rest. (Inserted by his son and daughters and grandchildren). Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland, Wednesday, 29 July 1936 STEPHENSEN.-In loving remembrance «f our dear grandfather. Just a memory fond and true, To show we always think of you. (Inserted by Stan and Les Blackley). Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland, Wednesday, 29 July 1936
