    • Accident: 10 Aug 1917, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; THEEBINE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A very serious accident happened to Mr. Andrew Hoffman early this morning. It appears he was rounding up horses, when the horse he was riding crashed him into a fence post, fracturing his leg just below the knee. Fortunately for him, his brother and another person were passing some distance away and heard him shouting for help. Needless to say, many willing hands soon got to work and bound up his leg. Mr. Bergoffer brought his buggy to convey him to the station, but the break was too bad for mm to be conveyed in a vehicle, so a stretcher was made and he was carried about a mile and a half to the station. Thanks are due to the stretcher-bearers. Messrs. Bergoffer, Heaters (2) Kunst, Hoffman, Balderson (2). Mr. O. Sullivan also rendered valuable assistance. Mr. H. Balderson rendered first aid at the station. The patient was then transferred to the railway ambulance stretcher and conveyed to Gympie by the 10 o'clock train. All the railway officials are to be commended for their able assistance. Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland, Friday, 10 August 1917

    • Personal: 3 Feb 1916, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; THE ALIEN PARENTAGE PROBLEM. (To the Editor). Sir,-In a letter from "Your Own Theebine Correspondent" in last Thursday's "Chronicle," I saw that Mr. R. Hoffman had tried to enlist, but was rejected on account of his German parentage. Now, sir, there is something very wrong about our recruiting. Two of my sons have enlisted; one of them had, four months in the trenches on Gallipoli Peninsula, and the other has been in camp at Enoggera for three months, and yet R. Hoffman's mother is my sister. His father was certainly born in Germany, but he arrived in Maryborough in the year 1871, and became a British subject shortly after wards by naturalization, and I have heard him declare that he was reared under the iron heel of Germany. He knows what it is; he has no desire to go, back, nor to see Australia come under Germany. When he got naturalized he ceased to be a German, and became a loyal British subject. About a fortnight ago I received a letter from my sister telling me that their son Rudolph had been home to ask his parents' consent to enlist, and that they could only say yes. He wanted the address of my son at Enoggera so that when he got down there he could look up his cousin. I felt proud of my young nephew then, and I am sorry for him now. I know there are Germans here who are not loyal; for such I have no time. If I had my way I would make them pack up their swag and send them back to Germany. They have no business here. Now, sir, I think it is quite easy to find out who are loyal and who are not. If the local police and Shire Councils were consulted I am sure they would know, and if such young men as Rudolph Hoffman and his brother Andrew were allowed to go to the front, I am certain their behaviour would be such that we would have reason to be just as proud of them as we are of our boys who went to Gallipoli. Hoping you will find room for this in your columns, and thanking you in anticipation.-I am, etc,. ANDREW THOMPSON. Deborah, 31st January, 1916. • Obituary: 17 Oct 1914, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; THE LATE MR ANDREAS THOMSEN The death of Mr Andreas Thomsen, which occurred at Tiaro on 22nd September last has removed an old and highly esteemed resident of the district. He was born in Denmark on 1st December 1823. His father died a couple of years later, and the lad's early education was of the most meagre kind. As he grew older he showed a keen desire to improve his knowledge, and all his spare moments were spent in study. At an early age he joined the military, and after spending some years in the strenuous life of a soldier, he undertook such contracts as fort building and other Government works. He was twice married; his first wife, by whom there was issue three sons and two daughters, predeceased him 49 years ago. His second wife survives him. In 1871 he sent his daughters and his eldest son to Australia, and three years later, he, with his wife and two other sons, followed. Landing in Maryborough, he spent twelve months in the vicinity of Pialba. He then settled on the Mary River, near Gundiah, where he undertook general farming, dairying, etc. In 1883 he moved to Tiaro, where he has resided ever since, being engaged in agricultural pursuits. About two years ago he met with a painful accident, sustaining a fracture of the leg, from which he never fully recovered. By his death, the district loses an honest, hardworking resident; and his family a devoted husband and father. Besides his wife, who resides in Tiaro, he leaves two daughters, Mrs Mikklesen (Maryborough), and Mrs Hoffman (Theebine), and three sons, Andrew (Deborah), Peter (North Queensland), and Sophus (Brooweena), besides thirty-one grandchildren and forty-five great-grandchildren. ANDREAS THOMSEN'S REMEMBRANCE CARD

    My Beloved Husband
    ANDREAS THOMSEN
    Died September 22, 1914, Aged 90 Years

One of the best the Lord could send
Beloved by all - a faithful friend -
Called home from those who deeply love,
To gain a glorious life above.
With aching hearts, with tearful eyes,
We linger where our dear one lies,
And breathe those sacred words once more,
Not lost but only gone before.
    DEEPLY MOURNED
