By the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Bleak- ley on June 25, at her late residence, Lade-street, Gaythorne, another of the pioneers who helped to build Australia, and extend the British Empire, has vanished. Mrs. Bleakley was the eldest daughter of the late George Montgomery, of County Cavan, Ireland, and came to Australia with her husband and child in the year 1860, and went at once to the bush. Her husband, Mr. Andrew Bleak- ley, who passed away 28 years ago, was a scholar and historian who took a keen interest in the politics and other questions of the time. In the early days of their pioneer life far from any school, Mr. Bleakley gave his evenings, after a heavy day's work, to teaching his children, and children of neighbours, and on Sundays held a Sunday School and Bible class, and Church services open to all who could attend. These intrepid pioneers went first to Waraba (off the North Coast Line), and after returning to Brisbane for a short time finally settled at Upper Caboolture in 1877. Quite a host of people remember how welcome visitors were at Brookvale, where open house was kept, and merry parties of young people gathered. The old home is now the residence of Mr. Basil Bleak- ley. When land was first thrown open to selection in this district, many Bavarian Missionaries were among the first settlers. This, of course, was long be- fore the day of railways, the travelling being by pack horse, or wagon, and communication with Brisbane took the settlers three days going and three days, returning with their household stores and goods. There was also communica- tion by sea, which entailed long drives on rough roads. The late Mrs. Bleakley, who was in her 89th year, is survived by six daughters and six sons. The daugh- ters are: Mrs. M. J. Franz, Hendra (widow of Mr. W. Franz, who was also a pioneer of Stony Creek), Mrs. A. R. Findlay (Enoggera); Mrs. J. P. Davies (West End); Misses Adela, Mary, and Olivia Bleakley. The sons are Messrs. William, Andrew, Arthur, John, Basil, and Cle- ment Bleakley, five of whom are married and with one exception are all engaged in dairying or grazing pursuits. Mrs. Bleakley had a brother who served in the Crimean war, also five grandsons in the Great War, four of whom paid the supreme sacrifice. Her sister, widow of the late T. P. Pugh, Police Magistrate, resides at the home of her son-in-law, Rev. S. W. Bath, Ipswich, and her other sister, the late Mrs. G. P. Merry, of Toowoomba, predeceased her some years ago. There was a large attendance of friends and relatives to pay their last tribute at the funeral of Mrs. Bleakley, and many beau- tiful floral tributes were received.

    • Obituary: 21 Jan 1922, Brisbane, Qld; The death on 21st January of Mrs, Jonathan Carseldine at Eltonlea, Ridge Street, Northgate Junction, removes another of the pioneers of Queensland. Born at Cranford, St. Andrew's, North Hamptonshire, on 7th January, 1843, Mary Wood Buckby came to Queensland in 1854, at the age of 11 years, with her father, sister, and brothers. The family first settled in the district now known as Hendra. shortly afterwards. removing to Bald Hills. Miss Buckly in 1861, when 17 years of age, was married to Mr. Jonathan Carseldine by the Rev. John Moseley, in old St. John's pro-Cathedral. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Carseldine lived in the Caboolture district, where they were engaged in the dairying industry. At the time of the Gympie gold rush in 1868. Mrs. Carseldine had many interesting experiences, which resulted from their residence being situated on the old main road between Brisbane and Gympie. Although not a nurse by profession, the common sense and practical, kindliness of Mrs. Carseldine made her services in much demand in a district in which medical attendance was difficult to obtain, and in addition to the numerous duties of bringing up a large family the deceased lady was noted far and wide for her hospitality. Of a deeply religious disposition, she won the affection and esteem of all with whom she came in contact. The last 16 years of her life were spent at Northgate Junction, and in spite of the loss of her sight some years ago she maintained her cheerfulness and courage. Up to within six weeks of her death, which occurred towards the end of last month, she retained her intellectual faculties. The late Mrs. Carseldine was the mother of 14 children, two of whom died in infancy. Her descendants include over 80 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Her five daughters are Mesdames G. A. Atthow (Clayfield) W. Bleakley (Wilston), A. T. Unwin (Woodford), T. McCoskar (Peachester). and J. Williamson (Moore), and her seven sons are Messrs: Charles (Kilcoy). David John (Linville), Eli James (New Zealand), Francis (Darra), Herbert (Woodford), Julian (Caboolture), and Noel (Cairns). ,Four of the sons, like their father, are justices of the Peace, and all except the youngest, are on the land. During the past six months the late Mrs. Carseldine was visited by every member of her family, except one son, who resides in North Queensland, and was un able to make the journey. One son came from New Zealand to visit his parents. The funeral took place at the Lutwyche cemetery, the Rev. W. Powell, a very old friend of the family, officiating at the grave. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/192973248?searchTerm=carseldine&searchLimits=#
