    • Death: 4 Nov 1944, The Northern Champion, Taree, NSW; Death Presumed PTE. HAROLD BEATHE On Wednesday last Mr. and Mrs F. Beathe, of Cundletown, received word from the authorities that their son, Pts.. Harold Beathe, is presumed to have lost his life when travelling on the Japanese tansport which was recently torpedoed by an Allied vessel. The young soldier was horn at Taree, 23 years ago, and went to school at Cundle. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the A.I.F., and went to to Malaya shortly after the outbreak of hostilities with Japan. He fought until the fall of Singapore,.when he was taken prisoner. Brothers und sisters are Pte. Jas. Beathe, (A.I.F.), Heather (AIF)., Bertie, working in Taree), Alex, (at home), Mrs H. Weatherby (Sydney), Mrs. K. Agnew (Newcastle), and Miss Marjorie Beathe (Sydney). The Northern Champion, Taree, NSW, Saturday, 4 November 1944 CUNDLETOWN. (From Our Correspondent). I desire to convey sincere sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. F. Beathe, who received the sad news that their son, Jack, had lost his life when the Japanese "hell ship" was recently torpedoed. Jack had spent several years as a prisoner in Japanese hands after the fall of Singapore. It was only a few weeks ago his family had received the terse broadcasted greeting permitted by the Jap to his prisoner, and were overjoyed to know he still lived on. Jack Beathe enlisted under age and gave his young manhood in defence of loved ones, his mother, father, brothers and sisters. They have reason to be proud of his heroism and will keep him enthroned forever in their hearts. The Manning River Times and Advocate for the Northern Coast Districts of New South Wales (Taree, NSW), Wednesday, 29 November 1944 Master Alex Beathe, 6-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Beathe, recently was struck by a passing lorry. A fractured skull and many anxious hours for his relatives and friends of the family resulted. To date progress is reported from the hospital and one and all are hoping that his recovery will be successful and complete. The Manning River Times and Advocate for the Northern Coast Districts of New South Wales (Taree, NSW), Wednesday, 17 November 1943

    Rakuyo Maru
    Sunk 12th September 1944

Torpedoed and sunk on 12/09/1944 by US submarine Sealion off East Hainan island at around 5:00am. 1159 were lost.

On 4th September 1944, convoy HI-72 sailed from Singapore. Two of these ships, Rakuyo Maru and the Kachidoki Maru carried PoWs. The Rakuyo Maru carried 1317 Pows and the Kachidoki Maru a further 900.

On the 12th of September the convoy was attacked by US submarines and both these ships were hit. The Rakuyo Maru was torpedoed by the US submarine Sealion at around 5:00am.

The Japanese rescued some of the POWs from these two ships and they continued their journey to Japan on the Kibitsu Maru.

When the US Submarines realised that they had sunk ships containing PoWs, they searched for survivors, picking up 63 PoWs from the Rakuyo Maru. Of these 4 died soon after being rescued.

The Rakuyo Maru lost 1159 prisoners to the sea and the after effects of being in the water for up to 4 days.

These were often handwritten and illustrated on the voyage and then published and printed on arrival (see the ?Somersetshire Times?). The ?Marco Polo Chronicle? however, was printed weekly on board ship, on a press belonging to the ship owners, Messrs James Baines & Co. The newspaper was distributed free of charge, and enough copies were printed to ensure wide circulation. The complete series could be guaranteed by a subscription fee of one shilling. The La Trobe Australian Manuscripts Collection holds eight issues of the newspaper produced between July and September 1854, during the Marco Polo?s fourth voyage to Australia. As the passenger lists for this voyage have been lost, the newspaper is particularly valuable and provides an insight into shipboard life and the activities of both passengers and crew on a typical "clipper" sailing ship of the goldrush period. The issue featured here is dated Saturday, 26 August 1854. It describes "Crossing the Line" celebrations, a colourful feature of every voyage south; a "Poets? Corner", featuring a poem by the ship?s assistant surgeon; and a description of "The Motleys of Melbourne" to prepare "new chums" for their arrival in Melbourne. Many of the immigrants on this voyage were heading for the lure of the Victorian Goldfields and their chance to make a fortune or just a new start in life. H 17085. ?Marco Polo Chronicle?.
