    Notes:

    Birth:
Christian Thorning Engelstoft ( 8 August 1805 - 25 January 1889 ) was a Danish bishop of the Diocese of Fyens , Minister of Culture and historian.
    Upbringing and education

He was born in Næsborg in Viborg Diocese , where his father, Niels Lassen Thorning, was a priest. The mother's name was Ingeborg Marie born Engelstoft. When his father died early ( 1813 ), his maternal uncle, Professor Laurids Engelstoft in Copenhagen , and his excellent wife, who had no children, adopted the 10-year-old Christian Thorning as their child, gave him their name and their full love. This opened a bright future for the fatherless child. In the home of his new parents, he found the luckiest conditions for the development of the excellent abilities with which he was equipped. Together with Frederik Christian Holsten (died as diocesan clerk in Lolland-Falster Diocese) he enjoyed private tuition, especially by the excellent teacher Jacob Brøgger Daugaard (died as bishop of Ribe ), until he in 1822 became a student with distinction, which result he also obtained in the later examinations he took.

Influenced by Jacob Peter Mynster's sermon and the rectory life of Provost FD Mellerup in Greve , where Engelstoft spent his holidays for many years, it was his intention to become a priest, so he studied theology and in January 1827 took a certificate . He now began to maneuver theological students, while he himself diligently participated in the exercises in the Pastoral Seminary under the supervision of diocesan provost Henrik Georg Clausen and continued his own studies. In 1828 he won the University of Copenhagen's prize medal for answering the theological task concerning the Chaldean people. Almost in order to gain access to a travel scholarship, he took the theological licentiate degree in 1832 in defense of a Latin treatise on the history of the Jewish people , in which he had compared the biblical accounts with the foreign and profane contributions to the enlightenment of this subject.
    Academic career

However, he did not travel; on the other hand, he began to give lectures at the University on natural theology, and when he had won in an academic competition with Peter Teten Hald and Johannes Ferdinand Fenger , he was "against Hope, if not against his Will," 1833 appointed associate professor and the year after to extraordinary professor of theology at the University.

Engelstoft's major was church history , which he presented for a number of years with thoroughness and acumen. His writing business came to revolve around Danish church history, especially in the age of the Reformation . However, in 1834 he also became a librarian at the Community's (later sold out) book collection. On the occasion of the Reformation party in 1836 , he defended his dissertation for the theological doctorate : Reformantes et catholici tempore, qvo sacra emendata sunt, concertantes . In 1837 he began with his colleague Carl Emil Scharling on the publication of Theological Journal, which continued for many years (until 1861 ), and to which he delivered several treatises, especially concerning the history of the Danish Church.

That same year, Engelstoft became a member of a commission to revise the common translation of the Old Testament . However, the commission, which was abolished in 1850 , did not end the case. In 1838 he became secretary of the Bible Society of Denmark. On the occasion of the ritual negotiations, he published in 1840 the History of the Liturgy or the Altar Book and the Church Ritual in Denmark , a scholarly and rightly appreciated study.

The small conditions that an extraordinary professor had led Engelstoft to apply for a priestly vocation several times, which he did not get. Finally, in 1845 , he became professor ordinarius and member of the Consistory ; 1847 inspector at the University Quaestor and same year member of the Society of Sciences . He was the rector of the university in 1847-48 and as such came to give an academic memorial speech to Christian VIII , which proves his talent as a celebratory speaker, just as it also shows that he was close to the liberal direction that came to the Government in 1848. In the 2nd volume of Nyt historisk Tidsskrift , which was published in 1848, Engelstoft published his meritorious dissertationPaulus Eliæ, a biographical depiction from the Danish Reformation period . He was since 1843 (until 1852 ) a member of the board of the Historical Association (from 1850 its chairman) and in 1850 was elected a member of the Royal Danish Society for the History of the Fatherland . In the same year he was entrusted with lecturing on ecclesiastical law in the Pastoral Seminary, which prompted him in 1851 to provide a revised edition of Janus Lauritz Andreas Kolderup-Rosenvinge's Grundrids of the Danish Church Law .

After completing an 18-year academic career, Engelstoft was called bishop of Funen Diocese on 16 November 1851 and, after being ordained a priest, was ordained a bishop on Shrove Sunday 1852 by Bishop Mynster. In 1854 he was a member of the "Church Commission"; was decorated in 1859 with the Commander's Cross and in 1882 with the Grand Cross of Dannebrog. Was for the first 2-3 months of the year 1864 Minister of Church and Education in the fateful Monrad Ministry , but resigned due to illness and returned to his episcopate.

Engelstoft have as bishop was chairman of the Funen diocese Literary Society, whose historical-topographical collections he has made various contributions, particularly a treatise on Odense city's history, 1878 - 80 appeared in a new and much increased, special version.

Of his dissertations published elsewhere can be mentioned: Om Gejstligheden som Rigsstand i Danmark efter Reformationen . Odense City Parish History ; Om den danske Adelsslægt Brockenhuus (alle i Historisk Tidsskrift ); History of the Church Ordinance (in Church History Collections ).

Engelstoft, which was unusually small and slender in appearance, retained until its high vein much mobility and spiritual liveliness. When he in 1877 celebrated its 25th anniversary as a bishop, presented the diocesan deans him "in the total clergy everywhere a scholarship in 3000 Kr. For bicycling priest daughters as visible testimony of esteem and affection."

He died in 1889, over 83 years old.

On December 22, 1837 , he had married Lovise Holm, foster
daughter of the priest Høhne in Ikast .
