Peder Estrup, 6.10.1756-31.12.1818, rector, priest. Born in Nibe, died in Randers, buried sst. Es birth cost his mother his life, and when he also lost his father a few years later, he came to the house of his uncle, the later provost, mag. Christian Engelstoft who in 1772 graduated him to the university. In 1777 he took the great philological degree, in 1779 theologically certified. As a student he was known for his excellent knowledge, especially in Greek - his nickname was "Peder Grækeren" - and in 1779 he got a place at Borch's college where in 1780-82 he published three dissertations De Genio Socratis and otherwise spent some for his development significant years. In 1782 he took his master's degree with great fame and became a hearer at Our Lady's School in Copenhagen. One of his disciples, the later bishop JP Mynster, says that he was the only one of the teachers who knew how to put himself in respect, partly thanks to his great rigor. In 1788, E. became rector of Randers. He received a completely neglected school, but in a few years he succeeded in bringing it to its feet and gaining a reputation as one of the country's most excellent principals. Among the 112 disciples he graduated in 1799 was Steen Steensen Blicher who set him very high. Pedagogically, E., as personally associated with Ove Høegh-Guldberg,conservative, and when he looked with disapproval at the Duke of Augustenborg's reforms of the learned school system and even sat in very scarce conditions as principal, he sought vocation. In 1803 he became parish priest in Nykøbing F., but already turned s.å. back to Randers as parish priest at Skt. Morten's church and provost in Støvring hrd. (Provstiet he surrendered in 1812). Though held by his congregation, he never felt completely happy as a priest. The school deed had been his proper calling. Many internal and external circumstances prevented him in his later years from acting as a writer. A number of school speeches he has left behind show him as a knowledgeable, humanely educated personality. -Range with county provosts 1812.
