    Grand United Order of Oddfellows

    Source: Museum Victoria

The Grand United Order of Oddfellows (GUOOF) was established in England in the late 18th century when groups of independent lodges merged to become branches of this larger organisation. Belonging to a brotherhood which had thousands of members around the world allowed members to feel more secure in their membership. In those early days, members typically met in Inns, where they gathered for social and business purposes.

The Grand United Order of Oddfellows was established in Australia in 1848, with the first Grand Master of the Order being Brother James Reid (1794-1869). In 1854, the Port Phillip District of Grand United separated from the NSW branch to establish Grand United in Victoria. During the First and Second World Wars, many Grand United members enlisted for Active Service, and as with many other friendly societies, funds were created to provide for the medical benefits of serving members and their families.

In 1948, to commemorate the centenary of Grand United, the Grand United Centenary Centre - Homes for Aged Members (now Constitution Hill) - was opened. In 1985 GUOOF Victoria merged with Manchester Unity and members who wished to continue with the fraternal aspect of their membership were invited to join Manchester Unity. Like other Oddfellow societies including Manchester Unity and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), Grand United had various ceremonies, rituals, regalia and levels of membership.

Other 'problems' with the 'official' founding story concern the acknowledged founder, 'James Reid', who is said to have emigrated to NSW in 1844. 8

    THE STORY OF GUOOF AND
    TRAVELLER'S HOME
    IN THE 1840'S and 1850's.
The 1948 book says there is no local evidence for GUOOF before 1851 raising the question of where the information used by authors Smedley and Ridley came from.

The date of the 1st lodge's founding has to be much earlier, possibly 1844 and probably 1846 (perhaps both! see below) and the date of establishment for the SCM has to be at least early in 1847 when there were at least 2 GUOOF lodges in Sydney.

George Brown and Problems with the 1948 story of 'James Reid':

In the 1948 book it is claimed that James Reid 'emigrated to Australia' in 1844, that he established Travellers Home Branch, No 731, in October, 1848, and that he was Grand Master from that date to 1853 when ill-health forced his retirement 'from that office and from his means of livelihood.' According to this report, GUOOF subsequently paid him a pension until his death in 1872. I have been unable to find any 'office' reference to a pension.

His state of health perhaps derived from wounds received at the Battle of Waterloo where he was sabred across the face and had a metal plate placed in his skull. The accompanying photo shows him wearing British regalia, which might mean that he was already quite old when he came to NSW, or that he wore his UK regalia in Sydney and that this photo was taken not long before his death. Where is the original of this photo?

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. A French army under the command of Napoleon was defeated by two of the armies of the Seventh Coalition: an Anglo-allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington, and a Prussian army under the command of Prince Blücher.

    Grand United's First Australian Lodge:

In those days record-keeping was not as easy or so important as it is today and for a long time it's been thought that the first Australian lodge of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows was set up in October, 1848. But historians, following clues in the same way that detectives do, have discovered signs of an earlier beginning.

It seems, now, that in May, 1846, three men gathered at the Star Inn in George Street, right next door to David Jones first little shop. They probably had been discussing the matter for some time. Now, they formally pledged themselves to a lodge which was to be called Travellers' Home Branch, No 731.

This number means that the Dispensation (or Certificate) which James Reid brought with him to Sydney in 1844 was the 731st issued by 'Head Office' in Leeds, England. That's how many Grand United lodges there were already.

We know almost nothing about these men but we do know that James Reid was a battle-scarred veteran of the wars with Napoleon. He had been slashed with a sabre right across the face and might have died except for a metal plate which was put into his head. This must have been one of the first operations of this kind in the world.

The certificate allowed the lodge to begin its work. Payments were collected by the man elected to be treasurer and carefully noted down in the book against the member's name. This was extremely important.

Although it sounds as though lodge was just for men, Grand United was really acting on behalf of families. The lodge was the front line against hurt and poverty and it brought a lot of useful 'survival' information into one place. When the lodge met, the names of anyone sick was brought forward and their situation discussed. If they were eligible for benefits payment was arranged. If a member had died, a funeral payment was made to the next of kin. Because of all this talk of sickness, accidents and death, lodge members were the first to know of a doctor in the area. If there wasn't one, the lodge would advertise and interview doctors prepared to accept what the lodge could pay. He could even become an honorary 'brother' with his own regalia.

In time, lodge doctors might attend to virtually the whole of the local community. The Orders spread around Australia, and so we can say it was the 'brothers' who were largely responsible for bringing medicines, hospitals, and the equipment and services associated with health-care to virtually every part of the colony.

The importance of friendly societies as 'the voice of ordinary people' was recognised at public events last century. They walked behind the coffin at the 1873 funeral of 'the greatest Australian' William Charles Wentworth, and were in the official party when the first railway passengers went from Parramatta to Windsor, for example. Yet today, almost no-one knows anything about this wonderful and enterprising history.
