A mean robbery was committed at Mrs. Bundesen's farm on Tuesday morning last. A swagman who had been accommodated for the night stole a £1 note from the pocket of a workman while the latter was out milking, and then decamped, without waiting for breakfast. Mr. P. Bundesen went in hot pursuit, but unfortunately could not come on Mr. Swagsman's tracks. It is reported that he went towards Gundiah. [From our own correspondent] On the 3rd of January we had a heavy thunderstorm with rain and heavy hailstones. The ground was almost covered with hailstones, which did a great deal ot damage to all the young corn. It was stripped as if It had hean done with forks. Not a single leaf of tobacco is left sound. It is all cut into holes and rags. The laat couple of days the weather has been fine. The atmosphere still keeps hot, and heavy cloud, hanging about. The hailstorm did not do much damage to the early crops as it is almost all ready to pull, which the farmers ought to be thankful for. It is time for the farmers, to prepare land for wheat and potatoes, and also for the farmers to lookout for some good seed wheat. I think that it would be a wise thing for the farmers to send to Victoria for seed. I intend to send for Talavera and Purple St-aw. The first farm in the Rise and Shine area is one that was held by the late Mr. Alfred Down. The property has recently been acquired by Mrs. L. M'Lennan. Mr. J. Hold has made considerable advancement. He has done considerable work and has a good area of artificial grasses. Sixty acres of new scrub have been felled and it is nearing burning condition; and following and adjoining 60 acres from which he has taken a good crop of maize and pumpkins for his 30 pigs. Looking through this new scrub underneath the mountain, it is of first-class quality, well watered with what might be called springs at the head of Blackrock Creek. The pest of these new scrub lands in this locality is lantana. The seed appears to have been well distributed by birds before the scrub comes down, and once the fire goes over and burns the fallen scrub it makes rapid growth, and man-power with a grubber or pentoxide is the only practical combatant. Mr. Hold is fortunate in this respect, as he has a family of girls and boys to assist him in the developmental work now going on. This farm would be interesting to see in a few years' time. (Continued). Further on in the article) Pushing on, I go through Yalboroo to the farm of M. Albert Bundesen. Although essentially a canegrower, this man always has some pigs on hand for his own use. He welcomes the opportunity to send his pigs to the bacon factory, at 2d. a lb., as is done in other bacon factories, and he readily took some shares. A short distance away is the farm of Mr. P. J. Bundesen, father of the former. He was originally a mixed farmer in the Kingaroy district. Cane, pigs, and potatoes he now handles at the moment. One of the most progressive cane farmers is Mr. Allan Bundesen, who two years ago came to a practically undeveloped property yielding scarcely 100 tons of cane. He has not only erected a modern residence and outbuildings, but has developed the property to the extent that he will receive approximately 800 tons this season. Mr. J. Bauman is amongst the toilers who is wresting from mother soil a handsome return by his able manner of cultivation. Together with canegrowing, he has a splendid orchard, and some of the finest mandarins of the district have been received from the trees. Mr. P. J. Bundesen and Sons are rapidly developing their property, and while with others they experience difficulty in cleaning and planting at present, yet their determined efforts must win success. • Birthday Celibration: 7 May 1937, Daily Mercury, Mackay, Queensland; YALBOROO. Tennis is becoming popular again. A new court is being made, in the school ground. A large crowd spent an enjoyable afternoon on Mr. A. Bundesen's court last Sunday. On the evening of 3rd instant, a surprise party paid a visit to the home of. Mr. P. J. Bundesen, who will be celebrating his 70th birthday on Wednesday. The party was arranged in a hurry, but a large crowd assembled. The company danced and played games until a halt was called for refreshments. During the night Mr. A. Connell obliged with a tap dance, Mr. J. Bowman gave a recitation, and Mr. W. Gilotti sang. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs. R. M'Leod and Messrs. P. J. Bundesen and Len. Bow man. "For he's a jolly good fellow" and "Auld Lang Sync" concluded the proceedings. • Obituary: 27 Sep 1940, Daily Mercury, Mackay, Queensland; YALBOROO. (From our Correspondent). It is with deep regret I have to Record the passing of Mr. P. J. Bundeson, of this centre. The late Mr. Bundeson was 73 years of age, and had been in indifferent health for about 12 months. A few weeks prior to his death he underwent an operation, but failed to rally. During his residence here he became popular, and although of a quiet and retiring nature he was an obliging neighbor. He leaves a wife and nine sons, three daughters, and several grandchildren. He was laid to rest in the Mackay Cemetery on Tuesday, September 10, a large gathering at the graveside testifying to the high esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held. • Personal: 9 Jul 1945, Worker, Brisbane, Queensland; BEST RECIPE FOR WEEK-ENDED , JUNE 18, 1945 BAKED TRIPE ROLL Half-pound tripe, 2 potatoes, 1 cup breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon tomato sauce, 1 tablespoon of finely cut onion, 4 rashers of bacon, if preferred, pepper and salt to taste. Keeping tripe in one piece, boil in cold water, then simmer about 1/2 hour, or until nice and tender, lift out and drain. Have the potatoes cooked, and mash them with the crumbs, onions and sauce, mix well, spread on tripe (smooth side up to put mixture on). Roll up lightly and tie, and roll all in flour. Put into a baking dish, cover with bacon rashers, or dot with dripping; add a little water and cook for about half an hour. MRS. P. The Maryborough Chronicle of the 6th instant reports that the German immigrant ship Humboldt left Hamburg on the 3rd of July, 1873, carrying 379 passengers including 118 children under 12 years of age of whom 18 were infants under 1 year. Soon after sailing, scarlantina appeared on board, but in consequence of the perfect isoation isolation of thoso affwsted, the desease was confined to a comparitavely small portion of the children. 18 of whom were affected -the last on the 4th of October.Three adults were also attacked. Among the numerous children whooping cough also broke out, about 30 of them were affected. Afterwards under the influence of cold weather in the southern latitudes, broncitis arose and carried off some of them. Near the conclusion of the voyage, survey appeared among the adults. this was the natural consequence of neglect of sufficient exercise, to which the women with large familiesare particularilr prone. Water and provisions were of the best quality. A condenser was on board the ship. the deaths on board included one adult female, after confinement: 7 infants under1 year: 9 children under 2 years, mostly of bronchitis: 6 children under 6 years. Apart from the few cases of scurvy already mentioned, the health of the adults was most excellent, no serious desease having occured among them. [Bommand Peter Andersen Bundesen] [Holbol Bomhuss = Holbol Toll house] 1862, 31 August: Peter Andersen Bondesen in Holdbi was the first witness [godfather?] at the christening of Peter Andersen Thomsen, son of his sister Kiesten Marie Bundesen and Andreas Thomsen. 14 Oct.1864: Holbol Bomhuss; Birth of Petra Christina Elizabeth Bundesen and christening on 6 Nov. 1864 [Bommand Peter Andersen Bundesen] Peter Andersen Bundesen was Innkeeper of the Holdbi Kro [Kro =hotel] from 1860-1865. He had a contract there to for claiming tolls from travellers on the Flensburg Road. This must fit in when he was the Bommand in the Holbol Bommand's House. Holbi Kro is 20 Kilometres south of Aabenraa on the Flensburg Road [left hand side]. There is no mention of him being an Innkeeper on any of the children's birth certificates though. A Bommand was a toll man & Gate Keeper. He lived in a house at the gates of the town. He collected customs duty at the town gate. from people coming from the country to a market town with farm produce to sell. Kruså-Holdbi Kro In the middle of the beautiful scenery in the southern part of Jutland ? only three kilometers from the German border ? you will find a traditional Danish inn. It is the ?Holdbi Kro? near Kruså. Entering the premises, you instantly get the sensation that something special is awaiting you. In the early days, the building was commonly referred to as the Royal Privileged Holdbi Inn but, in 1981, the old buildings were taken over and renovated by A Hereford Beefstouw. The eldest son of the Damgaard family, architect Søren Damgaard, was in charge of the restoration. The cozy thatched house dates back to 1847 and the inn is rich with stories of its history. According to the A Hereford Beefstouw tradition, the restaurant houses several pieces of art. The walls are decorated with paintings by Henry Heerup, amongst others. A decanting machine holds a prominent position in the middle of the room and has become a natural part of the interior ? just like the classic grill, the salad bar and the solid wooden tables. McKewan, J.P Inquest: yes TIARO (From our own Correspondent) March 1 Since Saturday morning the water has been gradually disappearing from the fertile banks of the river under cultivation, and the crops to a great extent are seen to be levelled and where the corn is left standing it is found to be quite spoilt, as in less than 24 hours the grains crack and commence growing. The houses that were submerged are in a most deplorable state, being covered with mud, and it is impossible at present to calculate the loss sustained by the farmers. A farmer at Gundiah, in describing his loss by the flood, states that not only was the corn ready to pick carried away by the waters and the winter crop completely spoiled, but the surface of the land, ploughed deep, was completely washed away, ruining the farm, and this is by no means an individual case. Considerable damage has been done to fencing, culverts and roads throughout the Tiaro Division; at Teebar and Clifton the damage to fences was great and the loss of stock not yet known, but several carcases of drowned horses have been found. The water in Teebar Creek was 6 feet higher than in the '75 flood, but happily only one life has been lost-namely, Anton Emill Anderson, nephew of the man Joaaeson who was drowned at Miva crossing about a month ago. Deceased was employed at Mr. Bundersen's farm as a labourer, and Mr. Bundersen, seeing a lot of cockatoos on a patch of corn left, high and dry by the flood, caught a horse with the intention of swimming a creek that intervened, in order to drive the cockatoos away. Anderson asked where he was going, and being told, said you are an old man, let me go, I am younger than you. After some persuasion, Buudersen consented, and Anderson rode into the creek, which was backed up by the flood waters; there was no current. After getting in a little way, both horse and man went under. The carcass of the horse was got about an hour after, but up to the present the body of the man is not recovered. TIARO TO GOOTHIE.
[FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRBSPONDENT.]
Tiaro, February 16.
First it should be recorded that the three dairies have suspended operations owing to the impassable state of the road. A brisk demand for cheese has sprung up and is likely to continue for some time, which would enable the dairies here to extend operations, if only the weather changed. Most of the dairymen have had to turn their cows out, a serious lose to them when the cows shall again be needed.
Starting from the Tiaro Bridge on the eastern bank of the river the next farm claiming notice is Mr. Neilaman?s. His house is situated above flood mark, but like many others he was not so careful respecting his barn, but that was only 18 inches under water and his corn was placed up aloft. He, however, lost about 12 acres of growing maize.
The adjoining farm is owned and worked by Mr. Boi Jaoobsen, whose house was three feet under water, and his barn completely submerged, causing the destruction of 15 bags of maize, two bags of seed wheat, and one ton of potatoes. He also lost 15 acres of maize in the field and one acre of lucerne. Mr. Jacobean fortunately got his furniture safely carted into the town, where he and his family have sincs resided.
The lofty railway bridge crossing what is here known as Nash?s gully was fully two feet under water, a fact hard to realize when standing on Mr. Jacobsen?s land.
The farms of Messrs. Lawrence, Stevens and Barriskil, I shall report upon in my next, when taking the opposite bank, from which a fair view can only be obtained of the immense land slips which have occurred hereabouts and which are daily increasing.
The next farm has recently been leased to Mr. J. Cook, who has erected a substantial house upon it, which was just above flood level, but the family cleared to Tiaro for safety. He lost 60 acres of maize.
His neighbour, Mr. Cornwell, has his house and outbuildings erected on very high ground, but the waters came so near that Mr. Cornwell and his family cleared to a small dairy recently erected by him on a high and dry ridge on the road to Tiaro. No crops were lost here.
Mrs. Gilchrist, lost about 5 acres of maize, and like her next neighbour, Mrs. Gordon, had to turn out her dairy herd.
Mr. Gilchrist, jun., has lost about 5 acres of ripe maize and 4 acres of lucerne. His barn was flooded, destroying about 200 bushels of maize, but his hay in shed was above flood level. Fully 16 acres of low lying land has from one to two feet of sand washed on to it.
Adjoining this property is the tobacco farm occupied by Austin and Gilchrist, who have lost 31 acres of growing tobacco, which promised to give a heavy yield- a discouraging beginning for them.
Passing the uncultivated property known as Home Park, we come to a very low-lyiug farm occupied by Mr. W. Young, who bas necessarily suffered severely. The land is exceedingly rich, which may be accepted as an excuse for tbe great risk of working such low-lying land. Mr. Young's house was situated on high land away back in the forest, but his barn was 7 feet under water, causing the destruction of 70 bags of maize and all his harness. He also lost 9 acres of growing maize, 1 acre of lucerne, 10 pigs, over 100 fowls, 10 tons of hay in stack, and one tank.
Mr. George Jensen owns the next farm, and had his house slightly submerged, but his neighbour, Mr. Thompson, kindly came to the rescue with his dray and horses and took his goods to a place of safety. The barn was high and dry, enabling Jensen to save his dry corn and hay, but he lost 6 acres of growing maize, 2 acres of lucerne, and half an acre of tobacco.
Mr. Rasmussen?s house and barn are wisely built above even this flood level, and he was able to harbour his neighbour, Jensen and family, for three days. Mr. Rasmussen, however, lost 15 acres of maize and an acre of lucerne.
His neighbour, Mr. S. Thompson, had 2 feet of water in his house, but his barn was above flood mark. He lost 3 acres of green maize, and the fearful current hereabouts washed the soil off 6 acres of his land and left a deposit of 2 feet of sand on other 3 acres.
His brother, Mr. A. Thompson, had both his bouse and barn under water, but he cleared by boat on Friday night to Mr. Casey?s. He lost 600 bushels of maize and a ton of potatoes in his barn, and 11 acres of green corn.
Mr. Casey?s house and barn were high and dry, but he lost 3 acres of young maize.
Mr. Bundesen, senr., had his barn 2 feet under water, and he lost 6 tons of hay in stacks, 8 acres of growing maize, and 2 acres of lucerne.
Mr. Haden?s house was 11 feet under water, causing him to move to a new house a little higher on Friday, but next morning he and his large family had again to shift, this time to his barn, situated in safety on a high ridge. Mr. Haden lost 20 acres of maize, 2 acres of lucerne, half an acre of potatoes, and 6 tons of hay in stack.
Mr. Jeppesen, the well-known cigar maker and tobacco grower, next claims attention. His house was above flood level, but his barns were flooded, destroying seven bags of seed potatoes and half-a-ton of newly cut tobacco. He also lost 80 acres of growing maize, one acre of tobacco, and 1 acre of lucerne. The farms heree are on a rich alluvial flat, but dangerously low, hence as far as the eye can stretch the fields wear an aspect of utter desolution, every vestige of vegetation and every fence having disappeared.
Mr. Bundesen, Junr., had his house, barn and out buildings all under water, and had to clear to Jeppesen?s; his furniture bedding and clothing getting badly damaged, He lost 15 acres of standing maize, and a large quantity of seed wheat destroyed in his barn.
Mr. Sorensen?s house and barn were also flooded, severely damaging their contents. He lost 6 bags of seed wheat, 7 bags potatoes, 10 bags maize, 10 tons of hay and 15 acres of growing corn, and to complete his troubles had to clear hastily, with his family, to the school, where Mr. and Mrs, Wagner did all in their power to make them comfortable.
In trying to make my way to Mr. Wade?s, I should either have got drowned by taking the road, I was improperly advised to follow, or have been compelled to camp out all night in the rain, but, fortunately, just before darkness set in I met Mr. Wagner, who most generously turned back, and guided me over what is known as the Mountain road, a circuitous route, but which beaded many dangerous gullies, until after a long ride over boulders and through swamps we came in sight of Mr. Wade?s lights in the fine house he has recently erected, when Mr. Wagner bid me good-bye and wended his way home, leaving me his debtor for an act of generous kindness never to be forgotten. It need scarcely be added that I was most cordially entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Wade, who had just returned from Pialba, where they bad been on a visit during the worst of the flood, but returned to find their daughters safe at the bouse of Mr. Wagner, where their brothers had conveyed them when tbe flood got dangerously near the house. Mr. Wade?s house was only a foot above the higest level, and had it risen as much more would have placed his house in a dangerous position, quite isolated, and in a strong current. He has lost half ton of seed potatoes, 6 acres of maize, 20 tons of pumpkins, 1 acre lucerne, a ton of salt, 8 acres sets of harness, and about 160 choice fowls. He bad just broken up 4 aores of rich land from which the strong current has completely washed away the soil.

I was nearly forgetting, Mrs. Boge and daughters, who combine dressmaking with storekeeping and millinery Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland, Thursday, 1 October 1908 TAABINGA VILLAGE The third store and millinery is owned by Mrs A. Boge, assisted by her daughters, who are, I understand, dressmakers. Mrs A. Boge is mother to Mrs H. Olssen of the same Village, and herself (Mrs A. Boge) is a daughter of Mrs P. A. Bundensen, also of Taabinga Village. The old lady, although 74 years of age and blessed with many children residing in or about Taabinga, prefers to live by herself without attendance, and thus keep her independence rather than to reside with any of her children, who would be only too glad to accept her in their own family. I found Mrs Bundensen (senr.) very active for her age and well capable to attend, not only to her household duties, but also to her flower and, I think, vegetable garden. R. Jeppesen, of Coolabunia West, was married to Mr C. J. Johnson, third son of Mr and Mrs A. G. Johnson, of Eglington Station, Alexandria, Victoria. The bride was given away by her father, and attended by Miss Elsie Jeppesen, the chief bridesmaid, Miss Millie Jeppesen, the second bridesmaid, and Miss Essie Fisher, niece of the bride, was train bearer. Master Dess Jeppesen, nephew of the bride, had the important office of cushion-bearer. Mr C. Creighton, of Alexandria, Victoria, acted as best man, and Mr Albert Jeppesen as groomsman. A very interesting guest at the wedding was Mrs Peter Bundesen, senr., a sweet-faced old lady of 80 odd summers, still hale and sprightly, who sat beaming upon her many descendants who formed the major portion of the gathering. The bridal pair left Kingaroy by the evening train en route for Victoria, where the honeymoon will be spent. • Interests: 26 Aug 1890, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; HAM AND BACON CURING. Mr. Watson and bis assistant were at Goorah on Friday and Saturday last. On his arrival at Mr. Jessen's he was shown round, and expressed himself higly pleased with all the arrangements, and it was easily seen that pigs were a great item in the district, and though not so perfect as it might be, the pigs are turned into bacon in a scientific way. The preparations being required operations were started at about 9 o'clock. The first two pigs were knocked down, bled, then carried 50 yards to the water, cleaned, disemboweled, cut down, and hanging in their places in exactly 25 minutes, the assistant the whole time saying how it was done, and saying, "See" which was not in any way easy. When two or three more had been done the pupils started, some of them shaping very well, Mr. Watson the whole time explaining why and why not things should be done, which was listened to with great interest, the assistant showing how the intestines were cleaned and run without the trouble of turning them. During the day 15 pigs were finished. In the evening Mr. Watson gave a short lecture and answered many questions. Mr. Watson and his assistant were sincerely thanked for their courtesy during the day. On Saturday morning the curing commenced, the assistant again showing all he knew. Great fun and amusement was caused by the desperate, though vain, efforts of some of the pupils to extract the shoulder blade as the assistant did. Some of the pupils, however, succeeded very well, in fact, some of them seemed to go to work with all confidence, and succeeded in getting a word of praise from both of the experts. The different cuts of the trade were shown, how a ham should be cut; also a side for rolling, and everything was demonstrated to the full satisfaction of the onlookers. After the cutting up and paring was done, it was salted and then placed in a brine that would float an egg or a potato. The heads and feet were then all salted and neatly packed, and the 15 pigs were finished, salted, and placed in pickle by 10 o'clock. There were a lot of persons present on both days-60 or 70-amongst whom were Messrs. W. C. Wilson, P. Cornwell, P. Biddles, P. Joyce, J. Orphant, G. Stuckey, J. Wade, and many others. Great thanks are due to Mr. and Mrs. Jessen, also the Misses Jessen, for the way they entertained the visitors from all parts on both days. Mr. Watson left for Yengarie, and returns on Monday to turn the bacon, of which I will advise you further, as many of the old curers are rather dubious as to the results of the process. [From our own correspondent] On the 3rd of January we had a heavy thunderstorm with rain and heavy hailstones. The ground was almost covered with hailstones, which did a great deal of damage to all the young corn. It was stripped as if It had been done with forks. Not a single leaf of tobacco is left sound. It is all cut into holes and rags. The last couple of days the weather has been fine. The atmosphere still keeps hot, and heavy cloud, hanging about. The hailstorm did not do much damage to the early crops as it is almost all ready to pull, which the farmers ought to be thankful for. It is time for the farmers, to prepare land for wheat and potatoes, and also for the farmers to lookout for some good seed wheat. I think that it would be a wise thing for the farmers to send to Victoria for seed. I intend to send for Talavera and Purple Staw. There are only Mr. Wade and Mr. Jessen in this neighbourhood with anything like 100 to 120 milkers, and the former has sometimes made £15 a week for dairy produce, as well as mobs of fats he has sold from time to time to the butchers. Mr. Jessen sells "abundance" of butter, as "your own" terms it, regularly at top prices, so that does not correspond with "your own's" statement that they barely make enough for their own use. I suppose I must be one of the industrious men who looks after his cows, sincc I get 88 gallons per day from 20 cows. Let your correspondent beat that if he can. I did not lose a beast during the drought, and "your own" lost nine of his best milkers, so I think he should look after his own cows and grow fodder for them instead of giving advice to his neighbours. It would be better if "your own" confined himself to the truth, and not misrepresent this district, as he is in the habit of doing, to suit his own spiteful ends. I am, &c., Andrew Thompson. • Obituary: 21 Jan 1915, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; OBITUARY It is with sincere regret that we have to record the death of yet another very old and highly esteemed pioneer of the district in the person of Mr Andrew Peter Jessen, who passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon, at the residence of his son-in-law Mr P. C. Andersen, Ferry Street. The deceased, who was just approaching the alloted span, having been born in August 1845, was a native of Tinningstedt, Schleswig and came out to Australia by the sailing boat "Beausite" in 1866. He took up his abode at Tiaro, where for some years he was engaged in dairying and agricultural pursuits. He subsequently removed to Goorah, via Gundiah, where he also wrung a livelihood from the land. He was a typical member of the old pioneering school and all his energies was directed to the development of the district in which he lived. He was amongst the first associated with the earliest development of the township of Wooroolin, during the construction of the Kingaroy line where he had erected several shops including a butcher's, baker's, grocer's and of fruit shops, in addition to a couple of dwelling houses. His first wife, with whom he reared a family of twelve, predeceased him fifteen years ago. He remarried a second time and had issue, two children. His first family consisted of Mr Andrew Jessen and Mrs P. Bundesen (Coolabunia), Mrs P. C. Andersen (Maryborough, late of the Great Western Hotel), Mrs Joe Wade, "Willowdale" (Gundiah), Mrs Geo. Lochran (Gympie), Mrs T. O'Leary, Miss Ingelina Jessen and Messrs Ludwig, Christian, Johann and Hans Peter (all of Wooroolin) and Niels Sophus (Goorah). His widow and remaining two children, Alice Maria and William George reside at Wooroolin. The deceased was a good father and a fond husband and much sympathy will be extended to his sorrowing family. His disposition was kindly and his friends many, and by his death a highly respected pioneer is removed from our midst. The body is being conveyed this morning to Gundiah by rail for interment at his old homestead, Goorah, where the funeral will leave at 3.30pm. • Fire: 30 Jun 1915, Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser, Queensland; WOOROOLIN HOTEL DESTROYED. MAN BURNT IN FLAMES. (By Telegraph.) Wooroolin, June 29. The Wooroolin Hotel was destroyed by fire at 2 o'clock this morning. A lodger named Christian Anderson, a farmer resident at Tingoora, who was a lodger at the hotel that night was burnt to death in the flames, his charred remains being found afterwards in the debris. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The property was owned by Mr. Peter Jessen and Mr. Holmes was the lessee. THE DEVASTATION AT TIARO.
TIARO, February 1.
The distance from Gympie to Tiaro by rail is about thirty nine miles. The train leaves Gympie at 7.35 a.m. and reaches Tiaro at 10 o'clock. The Line runs through pastoral country for the greater part of the distance, this, however, alternating with patches of Scrub at intervals during the first half. The cattle country comprises both classes in quality, first and second. There is a very small area of the first class, however. The greater part of the land is even lower than second-class pastoral. The alternating scrub patches are somewhat sour too, if one may judge from the indifferent character of the indigenous growth. Down the line from Gympie the indication of a recent or indeed of any flood are few, only when the train draws near to Tiaro are the recently inundated river flat opened up to the traveller.

The district of Tiaro, which is the head centre of the agricultural industry of the Mary comprises some thirty-flve miles of the valley of the Mary, largely including the low lying flats on the banks of the river, with a greatest breadth of from one to three miles. This strip of soil possesses wonderful fertility. Nearly three decades have passed since man first began to make large drafts on the vitality of this land, and yet its powers of reproduction continue as unimpaired as ever. The reputed average yield of the Mary farms is about thirty-five bushels of maize to the acre. In good seasons this rises to sixty, seventy, and even eighty bushels! The past season has been phenomenal, and the settlers expected fully seventy bushels to the acre. They had looked forward to the prolific yeild of this good season for the redemption of their losses during the past three, the years of alternate drought and sudden flood. The energy of the district has been centred on the development of this crop; with the prospect of an early liquidation, the store bills assumed alarming dimension, and the farmers employed a little extra labour on the land.

This was the condition of affairs in the valley of the Mary at the commencement of the late disastrous flood. The maize was nearly ripe, and a lot of potatoes quite ready for market still, remained in the ground. On the 24th and 25th January the flood came and swept nearly the whole of the crops away. The devastation has been almost absolute, a few bushels of maize here, and there out of an estimated outturn of 25,000 bushels only having beon saved. There was no back water silently working its way up the ridges, no still lakes in the low-lying flats nothing but a roaring, foaming torrent more than two miles wide pursuing its mad career unchecked towards the ocean.

At this stage in her seaward course the Mary in flood time has gathered together a tremendous volume of water. starting from her source in the remotest recesses of the Blackall Banges, and fed by innumerable tributaries both large and small, she sweeps down to Gympie, a distance of over fifty miles. By the time Tiaro is reached another fifty miles of country has been traversed, and the flood demon travels on the wings of the wind in his career of destruction. Between here and Gympie the mighty torrent has gathered the waters of Wide Bay Greek, draining the Kilkivan and Widgee Ranges and Manna Creek, which is fed by the Dividing Range between the Burnett and the Mary. The watershed from the fall of the Burnett Bange towards the eastward is very steep, and the various tributaries deep and narrow. At the point where they join the Mary, the Wide Bay and Manna Creeks are, in flood time, formidable rivers themselves.

At Tiaro the residents of twenty years state that the recent flood rose 6ft. higher than the flood of any past year within their recollection. The days on which the late flood was at its highest were Friday and Saturday. The Gympie flood, it will be remembered, rose on the preceding Thursday morning. At Tiaro, as near as I can judge by the marks on the banks, the river must have risen fully 70ft.! All along the banks large areas of land were swallowed by the torrent. Gaps of two, three, and four acres have, at intervals, totally disappeared. While the waters were subsiding these abnormal landslips were constantly taking place, accompanied by a noise like the roar of artillery. These slips are even in a minor degree, taking place while I write this letter.

The Tiaro district produces maize, potatoes, oats, lucerne, setaria, sugar, and large quantities of fruit and vegetables. The supplies of both Gympie and Maryborough are drawn from this source. Maize is the staple product of the district, sugar being regarded as only a subsidiary growth. The farmers here profess a hearty contempt for sugar, regarded in the light of a profitable product. They state that many of the farmers hereabouts went broke in the olden days at sugar-growing. According to their own showing, it seems that several crushing mills were erected and the farmers were induced to plant a supply of cane to keep them going. Then, as the supply of cane went up, the price of it went down, and finally a number of the farmers "went under" completely. This is very many years ago; but to this day there are farmers who relate the bitterness of their early experiences in the then newly initiated sugar industry. Sugar, however, is still a minor product of the district, but, with one solitary exception, all the mills send their juice down the river by punt to bo manufactured at Yengarie,

As regards the loses in the Tiaro district as a consequent upon the flood, I have chatted with several of the leading residents to-day. Mr. Jonathan Job, Storekeeper, who has a fine large place of business and a splendid stock, has lived at Tiaro since about 1870. He states that in past good seasons 12,000 bushels of maize have passed through his hands en route to market. Then he was only one of several agent. The total yield in such a year as that would certainly have amounted to 20,000 bushels. Since then more land has been planted, and the yield for the past season, the crop just destroyed by flood, was expected to be an extraordinary one. " Yes," he replied in answer to my question, " 25,000 bushels would be rather under than over the mark."

One of the hotelkeepers, Mr. Nathan Frall also a twenty years' resident confirmed this view, as did also Senior - constable Pickering, a resident of the district during thirteen years. Certainly this loss has been enormous, more than two-thirds of the entire crop having entirely disappeared. Reckoning it on the basis of two-thirds?at 3s. 6d. a bushel, a moderately estimated value, we have at once a loss of about £3000 for one product alone, without counting the wholesale destruction of house property, and loss of clothing and implements. And the living expenses of the next next season, while the new crop is still growing, also must be added to the loss. From what I have seen and heard I think the total loss cannot be much under £8000 or £9000, not a wry large sum, perhaps, until the reader rsalises that it represents the total possessions, tbe result of yeas of industery and thrift, of at least two thirds of the settlers in these parts.

Beginning with the details of the losses, Mr. W. C. Wilson, of Binbirrun, a sugar plantation fifteen miles from Tiaro, has lost about £1500, damage to crops of sugar and maize and injury sustained by the sugar mill. Johan Johnson, a farmer, has not only lost all his crops, but was also washed out of his house and had to seek refuge on a ridge to the rear. Most of this man's maize had been harvested and was stored in the barn prior to the flood. This, however, did not save it, crops, barn, and everything were swept away.

As I said in my last letter, the whole of the settlers on the low lands around Diokabram, including Messrs. Tullooh, Jenkins, Lipsett, and others, have lost heavily; this land has always produced wonderful crops of maize.

At Miva Crossing Hotel (Mr. J. Orphant's), fifteen miles from Tiaro, the flood waters entered the house, notwithstanding the fact that it stood on an unusually high bank. Very considerable damage was also effected here among the crops. Manna Creek empties into the river near here, and during the flood reached a far greater height than has ever been previously recorded. All the farms between Miva and Home Park, about twenty in number, had their crops washed away. Messrs. Biddell. Bros., of Brieyriam plantation, also lost a large qnantiy of fruit and produce.

Coming nearer to the township of Tiaro, Mr. Cornwall, of Redbank, lost a large quantity of maize, potatoes, and lucerne. Mr. Stevens, of Haseldean, lost 6 acres of maize, and the water stood in his house to a depth of 2ft. Mr. Lawrence's 30 acres of orops arc all gone; these included maize, potatoes, and lucerne, and the land was completely covered with water. Mr. Nelleman, of Tiaro, is also a heavy loser.

At the town ship of Tiaro the flood presented a scene of awful grandeur, from four to five miles of water being in sight; the river is stated to have been running at a speed of twenty miles, an hour.

Mr. M. P. Neilsen, of Gootchie Creek, six miles distant from Tiaro, occupies a very low farm. He is thus a loser to some extent by even the slightest fresh and has been flooded no fewer than three times during the past twelve months. By the late flood this unfortunate man has lost 92 acres of maize. At Tiaro during the worst two days of the flood, Messrs. George Waldock, Robert and John Stevens, Robert Ewbank, Forbes, Douglas, G. Brims, and Senior-constable Pickering were indefatigable in their efforts to save life and property, and traversed, in boats the worst portion of the flooded country.

Continuing the catalogue of disasters, Mr. Aaron Skinner, of Tiaro, has lost half his crops. Mr. Andrew Jessen succeeded in saving seventy bags of maize. Mr. Knudsen, of Good Hope, lost 40 aores of cultivation, maize, potatoes, and lucerne. Mr. H. Maslen saved 400 bushels out of 40 acres of splendid maize. Mr. N. Sorensen lost the whole of his crops, valued at £600. The whole of Mr. James Philpott's cultivation, between 20 and 30 acres, has also been destroyed. Mr. George Brun's, being situated on elevated land, has escaped with comparatively slight injury. Lower down the river Mr. S. G. Richards lost 15 acres of maize. This was a very heavy crop, many of the stalks had grown to a length of 15ft. Mr. Gysing saved 100 bushels out of 80 acres of maize. Mrs. Benstead saved 2 acres out of 20, the remainder being swept away.

Mrs. James Rankin saved only about twenty bushells from a standing crop of 23 acres. Mr. Carruthers lost the whole of his crop as well as a large portion previously harvested, and would have lost his house by a large tree being swept against it had the latter not been fortunately arrested by some vines and fruit trees immediately above the house. Mr. Hall, of Aurora Sugar Plantation, has lost a large quantity of cane, the greater portion of his land being completely inundated.

The Pioneer's Rest provisional schoolhouse, containing the library of the Pioneer School of Arts, was carried bodily down the river and deposited upside down in a grass paddock a quarter of a mile away from its original site. The books, valued at £50, were totally destroyed, as was also tho school furniture and fittings.

Mr. A. Moffatt, of Hope farm, lost 1000 bushels of maize. Mr. Shellback lost 700 bushels, besides potatoes, lucerne, &c. Mr. J. Neilscn lout 800 bushels of maize. Mr. Henry Friss, of Myrtle Creek, 5 acres of maize and a lot of fencing. Mr. G. Phillpot, of Myrtle Grove, a large quantity of produce and 30 chains of new fencing. Mr. Sinclair, of Enniskillen, finds that his entire crop has gone; while his neighbour, Mr. Hansen, has lost half of his.

In Wilson's Pocket, four miles from the township, the land lies very low, but is exceedingly rich. It has been occupied by several families, mostly Danes. In this locality the flood waters have ruined everything. Mr. Madson hns lost house, furniture, personal efects, in fact everything except the clothes he was wearing when the flood down; Among his losses there was also an apiary of fifty hives of bees. His furniture had been placed in a punt for safety, but during that memorable Friday night this frail bark either capsized or sank. This settler's loss alone would hardly be covered by £400.

Charles Davy, another farmer, remained in his house with two other men until the last moment; having a punt on which he depended for safety. During the night the punt broke away, however, and these three men ran very great danger of being drowned. They were finally rescued by Mr. N. J. Torpey, an old naval pensioner, whose right arm still retains a remnant of its former vigour. Davy lost everything he possessed his property, it could hardly be replaced with £200.

Drawing nearer to the township again, Mr. J. Hammill has lost some 5000 bushels of maize, 21 tons of hay, and 12 or 14 tons of potatoes. These losses will serve as an example of the absolute desolation which prevails in the district.

The Funeral of the late Mr A. P. Jessen took place yesterday at Goorah Farm, and was largely
attended by old friends from far and wide from Brisbane, Tiaro, Maryborough, Wooroolin, Deborah, Miva and Munna Creek.
Three beautiful immortelles were sent by the following: Mr. and Mrs. Holmsen and family (Brisbane), Mrs. A. Campbell (Maryborough), and Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Andersen and family; and there were many other wreaths.
The funeral service at the grave side was conducted by Rev. Hobbs, of Tiaro.

Forty-nine yearsago Andrew Peter Jessen set his feet on Australia's soil, and settled down on a farm at Tiaro.
Subsequently, he proceeded to Goorah, near. Gundiah, and was amongst the first settlors at Woorooiin, on the Kingaroy line, where ho acquired a good deal of property. His death occurred, last week, and the large crowd who followed his remains to tlio Goorah burial ground bore testemony to his
sterling qualities, He was 70 years of age

It anchored at Hervey Bay Qld.on March the 7th. 1872, after a passage of 96 days.She sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, on the 1st. February 1872. It took 24 days to reach Tasmania and then sailed up the east coast to Hervey Bay. The Emigrants were transported up the Mary River, on the Coastal Steamer, Queensland. It left Rockhampton at 7.30 am. on the 7th., and arrived at Woody Island,in Hervy Bay at 3.30pm. on the same day. The next morning at 6.30am. it pulled beside and made fast to the Herschel,embarking the 250 Emigrants. It steamed up the Mary River and docked at the Maryborough Wharf, at 4pm.,where the Emigrants were disembarked, and settled into their quarters at the at the Immigration Depot. History of the HERSCHEL EDITH BYRNE (1856) HERSCHEL [1865] The British ship EDITH BYRNE (Official No. 16216) was built by the Canada Works, Birkenhead, in 1856 (first registered, Liverpool 9 June 1857). 729.44 tons register; 165.4 x 30.2 x 19.7 ft (length x beam x depth of hold); 2 decks In March 1865, the EDITH BYRNE was purchased from Byrne, of Liverpool, for £8,250 by the Hamburg shipowner, Robert Miles Sloman, who renamed her HERSCHEL, after an earlier vessel that he had sold in Indonesia in 1859. Measurements (Hamburg): 333 Commerzlasten / 787 tons; 50,3 x 9,1 x 5,79 meters (length x beam x depth of hold). Fødselsstiftelsen, also referred to as Fødsels- og Plejestiftelsen (antiquated spelling: Fødsels- og Pleiestiftelsen; Literal translation: Maternity and Caring Institution), was a Danish maternity institution in Amaliegade in Copenhagen, Denmark

Amaliegade is a street in central Copenhagen, Denmark, which makes up the longer of the two axes on which the Rococo district Frederiksstaden is centred. Amaliegade extends from Sankt Annæ Plads to Esplanaden, passing through the central plaza of Amalienborg Palace on the way where it intersects Frederiksgade, the other, shorter but more prominent, axis of the district.

Den Kgl. Fødselsstiftelse (Royal Birth Institution) was founded in 1750 and was a place where single woman could give birth anonymously in order to prevent the mothers from killing their babies. That is why the children have numbers and sometimes no parents 'Den Kgl. Fødselsstiftelse'
Meaning of Den Kgl. Fødsesstiftelse: Den Kgl. = The Kgl. abbreviation for Kongelige = Royal Fødselsstiftelse is made up of two words - fødsels = birth ---- stiftelse = foundation (as in a charitable foundation) Fødselsstiftelsen (the Fødselsstiftelse) was an institution where unmarried women could have a child without revealing her own - or the child's father's name. It was not only for women to give birth, but also a place where could be left if unwanted and one could in the period 1771-1774 could leave a foundling in a box - and ring a bell -- and the institution could take care of - "adopt" - the child.
The purpose of the institution were to unmarried mothers provide a safe haven and prevent the frequent infanticide. In 1910 moved it to the National Hospital. In 1750 Birth Foundation was created, and here women could birth anonymously and get free medical care. The aim was to prevent the killing of newborn babies and their mothers were promised anonymity to "forever". This rule was changed in 2007. Birth Foundation was established in 1750 and was responsible for three functions:

Birth Institution, which provided maternity care.
Care Institution that housed nursing wards where children got the first care.
Opfostringsanstalten from which the children were exposed to foster parents or their own mothers on a weekly support.

Since the foundation was established in 1750, it was also responsible for raising the children, who were left to the Foundation's assistance - known as foundlings. This task was taken over by the Royal Opfostringsstiftelse, established as an independent institution in 1770.

From 1804 gathered foundations under the same management under the name Birth and Care Foundation. In 1910, the foundation placed under the hospital and became the maternity ward.
