Nothlings flock to reunion

IDA Tobin remembers playing with her Nothling cousins in orchards on the family property, riding horseback into the primitive town of Maleny for dressmaking lessons and brewing cups of tea on the wood stove to warm up during the cold winters of her childhood.
Mrs Tobin (nee Nothling) is one of the oldest descendants of a pioneering family which settled the Maleny mountain.
Sitting elegantly in a pink hat adorned with flowers and a pretty dress at the Nothling family reunion yesterday, the 88-year-olds flare for fashion and dressmaking remained evident.
She seemed to know a large majority of the 300odd Nothling descendants travelled from all over Queensland, New South Wales and even England to gather at the Witta showgrounds.
Mrs Tobins grandfather Martin Julius Nothling born in 1834 at Muhlhausen, Germany his wife Emilie and their five children boarded the merchantman Runnymede which left London on October 24, 1879.
The family settled in the township of Beenleigh where Julius (as he was known) became a brick maker and took on winemaking on a modest scale.
In October 1887 Julius and his eldest son Martin took up selections in the Blackall Range at Maleny, clearing more than 40 hectares in 10 years.
Two months ago Clayton Nothling released a 230-page descendants book featuring 1200 names, stories and photographs about the early settlers.
Yesterday, a bus took family members on a tour of the three Nothling properties around Witta originally named Teutoberg to reminisce the 125-year history of the family in Australia.
