Peder Estrup, rector and priest b. 1756 d. 1818. Relief by HE Freund 1825 1820-29 The last neoclassical monument in Sct. Mortens Kirke is Hermann Freund's memorial stone to the former principal at Randers school and later priest and provost at Sct. Mortens Kirke, Peder Estrup (1756-1818). The monument was commissioned by his son Hector Estrup, historian and director of Sorų Academy that should have been friends with the artist. The order was given to Freund, while he was still in Rome, where he worked in Thorvaldsen's workshop. The memorial plaque was completed in 1821 and later in 1825 exhibited at Charlottenborg. It is one of the earliest monuments within the type of ecclesiastical works that Freund was to excel in later, and where he was to show his independence from Thorvaldsen. The memorial plaque consists of a white marble relief depicting a priest kneeling at an altar. The frame is dark flamed marble with a Latin inscription in the pedestal. The relief does not show a portrait figure, but an idealized depiction of a praying priest. The figure is very expressively made, especially the head bend and the design of the hands is finely carved. Although the altar is equipped with a cross, candle and bible, in addition to being an ordinary altar, it also has a symbolic character. The priest kneels facing a candelabra, where the smoke from the extinguished flame can still be seen. On the other side of the priest stands a winged hourglass: Time flies and the flame of life goes out.
