Obituary:

Charles L. Croxen
Charles L. Croxen 88, a career missile machinist for Hughes Aircraft Company died peacefully in his sleep May 7, 2012 at his Tucson home. Born in Tempe of pioneer parents, Fred Croxen Sr. and Edith Lamport Croxen, he spent his early childhood years in then remote Payson, where his father was the Forest Service ranger. Former Gov. Mouer was the attendant physician at his birth. Charles was a proud Army veteran of the Third Army (Patton) with the recon Troup of the 71st Infantry Division. He liked to recount a close-call in an engagement with German machine gun troops at the Rhein River that left him bullet holes in his open field jacket, passing through as he bailed out of his jeep. Later in 1947 while with the University of Arizona ROTC he was awarded an athletic "A" for rifle marksmanship. He was widowed in 1986 by the passing of his wife, Betty (Haas) Croxen, of 32 years. He is survived by his son, James R. Croxen, Tucson and his daughter, Janie Ringelberg (Joe); two granddaughters, Emily Ringelberg, a missionary in Minhsiung, Taiwan, Dollie Ringelberg of Pinetop; a brother, Fred Croxen, Jr. of Flagstaff and cousin, Patricia P. Stephenson of Tucson. An early post WWII occupation included employment on the Coronado N.F. ad a Bigalow Fire Lookout and crew cook in the Catalina Mountains. Charles had a lifelong interest in hiking and backpacking in Arizona and was an active member of the Tucson Corral of the Westerners for over 40 years. At family gatherings he enjoyed the reputation of his expert Dutch oven sourdough biscuits and frequently shared many stories of his early days in Arizona. He and his interesting stories will be missed. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel of Trinity Presbyterian Church, 400 E. University Boulevard on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. to be followed by a gathering of family and friends in the church fellowship hall. He will be interred at East Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please remember Charles with a donation to the Tucson Chapter of the Tucson Corral of the Westerners, P.O. Box 40744, Tucson, AZ 85717-0744. Arrangements by FUNERARIA DEL ANGEL.
