• Obituary: 25 Sep 1952, Eureka Humboldt Standard; PIONEER HUMBOLDT MATRON DIES IN EUREKA HOME Mrs. Amalie Christiansen, 87, of Eureka and a former pioneer resident of Ferndale, succumbed Wednesday evening, at 3416 M Streett, where she had been living for several months. Mrs. Christiansen was born in Todsbull, Denmark on 27 Feb 1865, came to Humboldt County when a young girl and has lived here since then in the area, the last 10 years in Eureka. She was the wife of the late John Christiansen, and they had celebrated their Golden Wedding at Ferndale in January, 1941. The matron was an honorary member of the Ydun Lodge of Ferndale. Surviving are her children, Mrs. Meta C. Grahm of Eureka; Mrs. Peter (Christine) Petersen of Eureka; Mrs. Linus S. (Mabel) Hicks of Ferndale, and Harry P. Christiansen of Loleta. One son, Chris J. Christiansen is deceased. Mrs. Christiansen is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ellen Smith of San Francisco and a brother, L. P. Bundesen of Grants Pass, Oregon. The funeral services have been arranged for Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, in the Citizens Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Anders Steensen to officiate. • Obituary: 25 Apr 2002, Humboldt Beacon; Gordon Greengrove Hicks Sr. of Fortuna, Calif., was born on March 12, 1920, in Ferndale, to Linus Serenus Hicks and Mabel Hicks. He passed away on April 17 after a couple of months of illness. Gordon spent his growing up years in Ferndale attending Island School by the river and Ferndale High School. He also attended Humboldt Sate University for two years. He was raised on a diary ranch, which gave him the experience needed for future employment. He drove a milk truck from Arcata to Orick, picking up milk. When World War II broke out, he felt a responsibility to support his country and decided to enlist in the Coast Guard, where he was stationed in South Carolina and became a cook. His experience as a cook would be helpful in later years when he would prepare large dinners in Ferndale for various organizations. While he was serving in South Carolina, he met the young lady who would become the love of his life, Ada Barfield, and they were married in 1943. They adopted Gordon Jr., in 1944 as well as Kathleen in 1947. After serving in the military, they came to California and Gordon went to work for Valley Flour Creamery. With his knowledge of the dairy business, Gordon became a milk tester. A milk tester went from dairy to dairy testing the butterfat content of the milk. He became acquainted with many of the dairymen and enjoyed dinner with them. He often remarked how much he enjoyed the good meals and how much weight he gained. To have more time with his family and friends, he quit milk testing and went to work at the Ferndale Post Office in 1956. He worked there until 1958 when he moved to Fortuna and began work at the Fortuna Post Office. In the early 1950s, Gordon joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and became very active holding several callings including branch president. One of the positions he had was home teacher, a calling which he faithfully filled until his passing. One of his favorite activities was going with Ray Olsen and the youth of the church to the Yolla Bolly. They would pack in with horses and camping equipment. Due to the lengthy illness of his wife, Ada, he retired early to take care of her, which he lovingly did until her passing. After Ada's passing, his afternoons were spent going on rides around the back roads of the county with his dog Fisty. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ada; and his parents, Linus and Mabel Hicks. He is survived by his son, Gordon Greengrove Hicks, Jr. (Buddy); his unofficial granddaughter, Erin Bartlett and her mother, Sandy Bartlett. Services were held on Tuesday, April 22, at Goble's Fortuna Mortuary, and was officiated by Bishop David Yarrington. Interment will follow in the L.D. S. section at Ocean View Cemetery. • Obituary: 18 May 2016, Times-Standard; DORIS RAE CHRISTIANSEN HASTINGS-Doris Hastings passed away peacefully on April 2, 2016 and was very proud to have recently celebrated her 95th birthday. She was born to Chris and Lucinda Rae Wilkinson Christiansen in Fortuna on February 22, 1921, the second eldest of five siblings. The family lived in Ferndale at that time before moving to Arcata where she attended Stewart Grammar School and Arcata High School. The family returned to Ferndale her sophomore year where she graduated from Ferndale High School in 1938. After attending Merritt Business College in Oakland, she went to work for the office of Morrison & Morrison in Eureka, continuing her employment with them her entire working years retiring in 1988. Mom married our Dad, Charles H. "Chuck" Hastings, on July 30, 1943. They were married 52 years before his passing on June 19, 1995. They had three daughters: Sharon Lynn (Denny) Katri, Sandi Lee Bella and Mary Lou (Ray) Kimberling. She was the sister of the late Clifford Christiansen, Edward Christiansen and Mary (Gene) Whitney. She is survived by her brother, Richard (Joan) Christiansen of Benicia. Mom is also survived by her grandchildren: Shelly (Todd) Rice, JJ (Aarin) Katri, Lisa Lorenzen, Lori Pearce, Ryan Kimberling and Emily (Dustin) Pulitano; her great-grandchildren Hayley and Hunter Rice, Abiona and Sawyer Katri, Ashley Pearce (Marcus) Powell, Linus, Lacey and Broghan Lorenzen, Brinslee Glavich, Brooke Spencer, Paige Lyons, Ryder Breckenridge, Julian Pulitano, her great-great-granddaughter Abigail Lange, her son-in-law Denny Katri and many extended family members. Besides her parents, husband, brothers and sister, Mom is also predeceased by her step-father Lloyd Brightman, her daughter Sharon Katri, her granddaughter Kimberly Katri, and her great-grandsons Jacob Spencer and Kale King. In her earlier years, Mom enjoyed spending time with her many friends, getting together for lunches, dinners and Wednesday night socials at the Elks Lodge. She also loved to knit and crochet and we are very fortunate to have many of her beautiful afghans that she made for us. For the past several years Mom has lived at Frye's Care Home where she met and made many new and dear friends. She was very happy living there and loved Dolly and her staff just like her family. We are very grateful to them for taking such loving care of her throughout her stay. When she wasn't participating in one of their daily activities, Mom could be found reading one of her Danielle Steel novels that she looked forward to every day. Mom is loved and will be missed by all of us. The family would like to thank Dr. Uzi M. Selcer and, more recently, Dr. Petra Kuhfahl for their care of Mom over the last several years. Donald graduated from Arcata Union High School, and upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy. In 1950, he married Ellamarie Fanucchi of Arcata and they settled in Woodland. He was employed as the manager of the historic "State Theater", before they settled in Davis. Don was employed as a business manager, but his passion was growing flowers and gardening. He was well known as a designer of wedding flowers, and he taught flower arranging at the Davis Adult School for more than 30 years. He enjoyed teaching and sharing his skills with his students. He was a founding member of the Davis Flower Arrangers and was also a member of the Sacramento Arranger Guild. He was a devoted family man, attending plays, piano recitals and sporting events with his grandchildren. Survivors include: his wife of 60 years, his son, Eric Christiansen of Dixon; daughters, Donna Marqua, and her husband Frank of Santa Rosa; and Dana Welch, and her husband, Paul of Davis; grandchildren, Christine Marqua of Sunnyvale; Michael Marqua, of San Jose; and Glen, Neil and Blake Welch of Davis. He leaves two sisters, Janice Wohlers of Eureka and Joyce Cooper of Los Molinos. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Ralph and Robert. Lynda was a wonderful friend, loving mother and devoted wife, a faithful Jehovah's Witness for more than 40 years. She went to sleep after fighting a long battle, five years, from complications of pancreatic cancer. She will be greatly missed by all who have been touched, befriended and loved by her. Wherever Lynda went she left a gentle touch and a warm smile with everyone. Her warmth and sincerity was real and honest, and freely given to all. She was predeceased by her parents, Cliff and Millie Christensen; her brother, Kenny Christensen; and grandchild, Maxwell Ruhl. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Douglas Ruhl; children, Bron Roberts, Shon Goucher, Romey Miguell (Daniel) Maple; stepchildren, Brent (Ashley) Ralph; and mother (Jennifer) Ruhl; grandchildren, Alex, Alexis, Megan, Trevor, Dylan, Riley, Colby, Zach, Kensey, Nicholas, Titus, Pamela; and too many friends, bible students and extended family to name. All of us who knew and loved Lynda are eagerly awaiting to see her again in paradise.
