Obituary
Death of a Centenarian.
ON the 26th September last Mrs. Julia Ahern died at Redbank, Picton, in her 103rd year. She came to the colony in the year 1821, and had thus resided sixty years
in New South Wales. Mrs. Ahern was born on the 17th March, 1779, at Bandon, County Cork, Ireland, and distinctly remembered the main incidents of the Irish rebellion of 1778, of which she was very fond of speaking.
The deceased first resided in the colony at the Bark Huts, now known as the Cross Roads, and subsequently lived at Campbell town and Appin. In Campbelltown she lived at Chapel Hill, and the well-known Ahern's Hollow near the Catholic Chapel is named after her husband. Mrs. Ahern had
resided for forty-five years at Picton-during the latter portion of her time at Redbank with her grandson, Mr. Wilson. She leaves three daughters-one married to Mr. Wilson, Picton; one to Mr. W. Fieldhouse, Picton ;
and one to a gentleman at North Braidwood.
The old lady retained her faculties to the last, and being possessed of a magnificent memory her reminiscences of old times were exceedingly interesting. For the last thirty
five days of her existence she ate no food, and partook of nothing but tea and water; but her abstinence did not appear to impair either her mental or physical powers until
the very end. Mrs. Ahern was a well-known figure in Picton. She used to walk into the town from her residence, a distance of a couple of miles, regularly and was as lively
and active as a young girl. The funeral, which took place on September 30, was one of the largest that has ever passed through Picton. Every old resident that was aware
of the occurrence was present. The deceased leaves a very large number of grandchildren scattered all over the colony.
