    FINE OFFICER PASSES
DEATH OF MR. AUSTIN GREAT LOSS TO STATE
Worn out by a life of unremitting labour, Mr. W. H. Austin, (Under Secretary of the Department of Labour and Industry) died yesterday after noon, and the State lost one of its best and most respected servants. His death came with tragic suddenness after only two days' illness. Mr. Austin, who was born in Brisbane 59 years ago, was educated at the old Normal Scnool and the Brisbane Grammar School. He entered the service of Finney, Isles, and Co., as a junior clerk, and in 1892 entered the Government Savings Bank. Four years later he was transferred to the Audit Department, and in November, 1918, was appointed Deputy Auditor-General.
A month later he received the appointment of first Commissioner of State Enterprises. He carried out his difficult task with great tact and diplomacy. When the Department of Labour and Industry was constituted a separate department, Mr. Austin was appointed Under Secretary, the position he held at the time of his death. As permanent head of the department dealing with unemployment he had to accept much of the worry associated with conditions of the last five years. A few months ago the Government appointed him a member of the Queensland Trade Delegation to the East, and he presented his report to the Acting Premier only recently. About the same time the Government decided that the man who had done so much in promulgating schemes for the re-employment of men and their families on settlement farms should be given a free hand to draw up a programme for the expenditure of loan money in reproductive and necessary works throughout the State and Mr. Austin was working on his important commission at the time of his death He found time, too, to supervise the allocation of special winter relief to the unemployed and their families. He was a foremost member of the Bureau of Industry, and his position necessitated his presence on many Government boards, as well as on public bodies working in the interests of charity.
    A FINE ATHLETE.
In his youth he was a fine athlete, and was one of the foremost Rugby Union players in the State in his time. Between 1893 and 1901 he represented the State on no fewer than 28 occacions in inter-State games and against New Zealand and England. He led the State side in 1898. In 1894 he captained the Queensland junior cricket team against New South Wales. In later years he became a keen bowler, and had held the State singles title and the South Brisbane Club championship. He served as president of his club, and for the last 23 years he had been honorary treasurer of the Queensland Bowling Association. He was a past president of the Brisbane Boys' Grammar School Old Boys' Association.
    Mr. Austin is survived b;y his widow and four sons? Messrs. W. T. (Sydney), A. J., C. G., and J. D. Austin. Messrs. J. A. and A. J. Austin are brothers, and Miss A. Austin a sister.
The funeral cortege will move from his late residence in Lamington Ter race, Highgate Hill, for the Toowong Cemetery at the conclusion of a ser vice commencing at 2.45 p.m. .to-day.
