CUSTOMS CASES.
An adjournment was made in the case of Harrison Bros and Kettle, of Wangaratta These defendants were charged with entering cream silk striped flannelette as cotton piece goods, the duty short paid being £1/5/5.
They stated that the goods were wrongly invoiced by the London shippers, whose invoice clerk was entirely to blame in having described the goods as "cotton shirting."
The case was adjourned in order to ascertain from whom the Customs agent received his instructions.

FROM ODH OWN CORRESPONDENT)
MELBOURNE, Friday.
The firm of Permewan Wright and Co, agents, were charged at the District Court today, with being the owner of a certain carriage licensed for the carriage of goods subject to the control of the Customs Department; they did on or about the 17th October remove certain goods imported into the Commonwealth by the s.s. Narrung, with intent to defraud the revenue. Mr Starke, who appeared for the prosecution, said the offence was a very serious one. Messrs Harrison Bros. and Kettle, general merchants, of Wangaratta, had imported certain goods, and had appointed the defendant firm to get them through the customs. The defendant firm had entered a certain case of goods for trans-shipment to another State, in which case it would not be liable to duty. The firm, however, apparently forwarded the goods to Wangaratta. Another person, apparently an employe, passed off a false case on a ship going to Perth. Messrs Harrison Bros, and Kettle forwarded the amount of the duty to Permewan Wright and Company, but the amount was not paid to the Customs. Prosecuting counsel contended that the excuse of the defendant firm that the act had been committed by an employe was not sufficient. It appeared from the evidence that a junior employee of the firm put the money payable as duty into his own pocket and got the box away surreptitiously. The question involved was whether Messrs Permewan, Wright and Co. were liable for the acts of their employee, and the magistrates
decided they were not, and dismissed the
case.

Recent Changes.
The Railway Hotel, Baddaginnie, has also changed hands, Mr G. F. Kettle having sold out to Mrs. V. McSweency, who hails from Maryborough. During Mr Kettle's career at Baddaginnie, extending over a period of only 15 months. he was one of the moving spirits of the place and enjoyed univeisal pouilarity, whilst there. His successor is now in the "Royal" and he himself has taken up his abode once more at Wangaratta, of which district he is a native, being a son of the late Mr Fred Kettle. in his day one of the foremost residents of Oxley. Mr and Mrs McSweeney, who succeed him at Wangaratta, give promise of becoming, like the outgoing lessee, highly popular.
