    CORONER THREATENS WITNESS WITH
    GAOL SENTENCE
The Nowra District Coroner, Mr. U. K. Walsh, at an inquest on Tuesday at Nowra, threatened to send a witness to goal because he had not appeared in Court at the required time.
The witness, Alexander John Mackay, pensioner, told Mr. Walsh that he had got Court dates mixed.
Mr. Walsh refused to accept the explanation stating he had personally reminded him to appear in Court the previous day.
He told MacKay inconvenience had been caused to the Police and Department
of Justice and was considering imposing a gaol sentence. Mackay then apologised.
Mr. Walsh found that Cecil Lumsden (66), of Kangaroo Valley, died as the result of asphyxiation when he accidentally fell face down in a muddy
path in Briniwar St., Bomaderry, on June 30.
Lumsden, alleged by other witnesses to have been under the influence of liquor prior to his death, was found laying face down in the street with his nostrils and mouth full of mud.
Medical evidence was given that deceased had died from suffocation.
John Byrnes, of Briniwar St., Bomaderry, said he heard muffled voices coming from Mackey's place the night before the body was discovered. He did
not investigate because similar voices were frequently heard in that vicinity.
Lawrence Joseph Melville, of Bomaderry, said he drove deceased in his taxi to Briniwar St. on June 29. Lumsden was
under the influence of liquor at
the time. After alighting from the cab. deceased was seen to stagger towards the direction of Mackay's house.
Sgt. King referred to investigation made by the Police.
Mackay in evidence said deceased often stayed with him.
He had gone to town to collect military pension on the day of his death.
