Life on the Farm at Riverview
    by Mervyn Jessen, 02-12-2012
I was born at the Maryborough Hospital.
My Mother and I returned back to the farm which was named River View via Gundiah, as the house was built
    over-looking the Mary River.
When I was school age, all of us kids,
along with Colin Gilchrist, John Thompson, Marjory, June, Daphne and Des
Lamke, would all gather at River View.
My Father would then row us across the Mary in a boat, mornings and afternoons, as Deborah School was across
the River. At times when the water rose
too high, he would not cross the river.
When I left the Deborah School was
closed for good. Some children went to
Gundiah School. I can still remember
the cane around my legs for doing the
    wrong things.
My main jobs on the farm were to milk
some cows, feed calves, pigs, and fowls.
After milking, I had to clean up around
the milking shed. I chopped wood for
the stove upstairs, and for the boiler
for washing clothes downstairs. I also
helped my mother around the house,
while my Father and 2 brothers worked
on the farm to grow vegies and green
    feed for the animals.
At times, I had to ride my bike about
15 miles to Gundiah for mail, bread
and odd things for the house. When I
    was old enough, I bought a motor-bike
when I joined the Gundiah Cricket
Club. Cricket was played behind the
    Hartvigsen's Store, and the late
During the War, many soldiers camped
and did training on a big slope at the
back of our property. Army planes flew
over the tree tops and would bomb the
soldiers with bags of white stuff. The
soldiers took most of our cream, milk,
    watermelons, pumpkins and vegies.
My Father got paid from the government
    much later.
It was long hours and tough work those
days, with horses taking the place of
machinery, but it was a good clean life.
My brothers got married and I left the
    River View farm about 1944.

JESSEN, Mervyn Roy 'Merv'. Passed away peacefully on April 25, 2015 in his 90th year. Dearly loved husband of June. Loving father and father-in-law of.
Fraser Coast Chronicle on May 4, 2015

      Farewell old friend
Mervyn Roy JESSEN , originally of Gundiah, passed away on April 25, 2015 at Hervey Bay, in his 90th year. Merv has
written previous articles about Gundiah Hall and growing up in Gundiah.
Merv was born 23 June 1925 to Neils Sophus Jessen & Kate Jessen (nee Young) of Riverview (on the west bank
of the Mary River were the Stewarts and Carneys current properties are.)
Merv was the 4th of four sons: Andy, Reg, Colin and Merv.
Neils Jessen had relocated the old Goorah School building on Riverview apart from the actual house, where the family held parties, with Merv particularly remembered his older brother Colin's 21st. We think the whole property was
divided into two when Neils sold to his sons, Reg & Colin. Merv moved away from Gundiah at approx. 19yrs when
Colin married, and his new wife helped run the farm, about 1944.
Merv married (Evelyn) June MacKenzie, 3 January 1951, whom he fondly recalls meeting when delivering milk to her
family house as one of his jobs working for Jurss Dairy. Merv & June had five children-Dellis, Lou, Gloria, Trevor &
      Evelyn.
Mervyn eventually retired from his Dairy Van Driver job having worked for many years at the Butter Co-Op.
Merv is proud Grandfather to nine, and Great Grandad of five. He is dearly loved and greatly missed.
Please refer to past articles in the Nov 2012,
March and June 2013 issues. Thank you to
Evelyn for recording her father's memories
      and providing these details.
