    BUDERIM PIONEER PASSES

    Marched to Rome With Garibaldi

One of the earliest pioneers of the Buderim district, Mr. William Henry Guy, who had seen service with Oaribaldi in Italy, died at Gneering Cottage, Maroochydore, on January 20 at the age of 95. He was born at Regent's Park, London, and spent a part of his boy hood in Italy. With other young Englishmen he served with Garibaldi during the latter's march to Rome. Turning his attention to Australia, Mr. Guy sailed for the colonies to try his luck on the newly discover ed goldfields at Ballarat. After meeting with partial success he made hfs way to Queensland, where he became associated with the late William Fryar, surveyor, who was engaged in opening up the little known South Queensland country.

SECOND SELECTOR Arriving at Buderim about 64 years ago, and noting the fertility of the soil, he decided to become established an the land, and was the second selector to take up land on Buderim, the late J. C. Dixon preceding him by one week. When other selectors followed sugar growing was under taken. This industry collapsed in the nineties, and banana, coffee, and citrus growing took its place. He took an active part in the ad vancement of the district, and for many years attended the Royal National Show as a district representative.

Mr. Guy married in 1877 Miss S. Hamilton, the eldest daughter of Robert Hamilton, of Calrossie sta tion, Upper Burnett district. His golden wedding was celebrated at Buderim in 1927. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. W. E. Parker (Maroochydore), and four sons, Messrs W. J. Guy (Buderim Mountain), C. J Guy (Brisbane). H. H. S. Guy (Brisbane), and H. S. Guy (manager of Victoria Downs station)
